1. Batman (1989)

When Warner Bros. and Tim Burton launched a new modern Batman movie in 1989, the Caped Crusader had to look the part. This was especially true after the divisive response to Michael Keaton’s casting in the role. To say they pulled it off would be a major understatement.

From his very first appearance, Keaton was truly a sight to behold in that Batsuit. With an all-black bodysuit, chiseled body armor and a huge, effective, winged caped, it was both logical for a crime-fighter seeking vengeance on a crime-ridden city, and appropriately terrifying for a man dressed like a giant bat.

Its crowning achievement was the cowl. With its long bat-ears and pointed nose, the silhouette of Batman was unearthly. While some have criticized the wider mouthpiece (which didn’t always fit around Keaton’s face), this actually worked in its favor, making the Dark Knight look a lot more sinister than he ever had before.

The Batsuit that Keaton wore in Batman has become the benchmark for all modern day Batsuits. It’s a timeless template that all that came after it have used, and it’s a piece of cinematic history that left a whole generation in awe. And it’s a large part of why Michael Keaton is widely regarded as the greatest Batman of them all.
