18. Gotham

Gotham is an often overlooked and yet always enjoyable piece of Batman history. The prequel series aired for five seasons of Fox between 2014 and 2019, looking at how the various heroes and villains of Gotham City came to be. Bruce Wayne was at the heart of the story and he was played by the young David Mazouz.

Mazouz was incredible in the role, giving us a performance that really solidified him as one of the best live-action portrayals of Bruce Wayne. Unfortunately, the show’s planned lengthy run was truncated and thus the final season fast-tracked everything, using a time-jump to create the illusion that the young Bruce had become Batman in the decade off-screen.

The show did what it could given the limitations, only showing silhouettes and shadows to tease The Dark Knight, but the final shot, in which we see Mazouz in the Batsuit, left a lot to be desired.

Whether it was the oversized cowl, or very soft-looking armor, the design just looked cheap, and it left fans wondering why Gotham couldn’t have just teased us with the back of one of the many Batsuits from the Batman movies instead.

It’s fine given what Gotham had to work with, but the show deserved more than that.
