Honorable mention: Battle at Big Rock

During the height of the Jurassic franchise’s resurgence, Universal released a short companion film titled Battle at Big Rock. Directed by Colin Trevorrow, the eight-minute movie is set a year after the events of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and its sole purpose is to showcase how mankind and dinosaurs are coexisting after the auction breakout. Spoiler alert to anyone who hasn’t seen it: They aren’t coexisting very well.

A family camping trip becomes the battleground for a war between an Allosaurus and a family of Nasutoceratops, and the humans are caught in the middle of it all, fearing for their lives. Needless to say the stakes are high for such a short outing, and a large part of that is how the film leans into a somewhat more horror approach. It’s a heart-pounding watch, and a reminder that the Jurassic franchise is capable of stories outside of the corrupt business tycoons and theme parks gone wrong.

Battle at Big Rock might not be one of the core six movies, but it stands out for trying something that most of them did not, and that is more than enough to earn it an honorable mention on this list. Honestly, it deserves more love.
