50 must-read Comic Books of the 2000s
By Mark Lynch
10. Paper Girls
Writer: Brian K. Vaughan
It’s disappointing that Paper Girls didn’t get renewed. The comic book offered adventures that would have blown viewers’ minds. Thankfully, they can always go back to the comic books. As usual, Brian K. Vaughan’s story is more than action. The lead characters will make you laugh, cry, and reflect on life.
9. Jessica Jones Alias
Who is Jessica Jones? Why did she become a character that viewers adored on Netflix? It all started with Brian Michael Bendis’ Alias. In four volumes, witness the evolution of Jessica Jones as a detective and woman and learn how she gained her powers.
8. Suicide Squad
Writer: Rob Williams
Suicide Squad won’t break you down emotionally. Sure, you’ll get caught up in Killer Croc’s relationship (no spoilers), but that isn’t what this series is about. It’s all about the fighting, the jokes, and, of course, Harley Quinn. This is all guns, boomerangs, giant mallets, and a human crocodile.
7. Astonishing X-Men
Astonishing X-Men is the blueprint that the MCU should follow. It’s the epitome of everything you’d want from an X-title. There’s character development, examples of what makes each hero great, and a new set of heroes and villains for the X-Men to encounter.
6. Bitch Planet
Writer: Kelly Sue DeConnick
Writer Kelly Sue DeConnick created a world where misogyny is higher than it is in real life. If you’re a woman and don’t agree with any man, you’re sent to a prison in outer space. In some cases, women are sent to jail for a “crime” they didn’t commit. Be warned, this isn’t for all readers, but it’s worth binging.
