50 must-read Comic Books of the 2000s
By Mark Lynch
50. The Boys
Writer: Garth Ennis
Before the hit Amazon Prime show, The Boys was a bloody comic book with a lot of depth. People may have started reading it for the action, but the story about friendship and love was the biggest takeaway.
Eisner Award winner Garth Ennis does a fantastic job showing a brutal, realistic view of what superpowered beings would be like if they were in the real world.
49. Y: The Last Man
Writer: Brian K. Vaughan
Y: The Last Man is easily one of the best comic books of all time. This comic has everything you could want in a story. For example, there’s comedy, love, character development, and real-time stakes. Although, don’t read this if you aren’t ready to have your heart broken. No character is safe.
48. Sex Criminals
Writers: Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky
This starts simple. Two characters have sex, and when they climax, time freezes around them. Leading them to try to rob a bank. As silly as this is, it becomes a series about mental health, sex positivity, and boundaries.
47. 30 Days of Night
Writer: Steve Niles
30 Days of Night was an entertaining movie, but the comic book series was better. There’s an extensive explanation of why the vampires are in Barrow, Alaska. Unlike the movie, the alpha vampire was upset about what was going on.
46. Deadly Class
Writer: Rick Remender
Writer Rick Remender introduced a high school training teenagers to be assassins. Leaving the characters to make decisions that affect them forever. Throughout this series, characters you love and hate will surprise you. This is a must-read.
