25. Star Wars: Vader Down

Writers: Kieron Gillen and Jason Aaron

If you want to get into Star Wars comics, Star Wars: Vader Down is the best place to start. Enjoy seeing Princess Leia, Luke Skywalker, and Han Solo like you’ve never seen. Characters like Doctor Aphra and her killer droids (BT-1 and 0-0-0) make an appearance as well. The latter are characters that redefine what Star Wars comic books are.

24. New Avengers

Writer: Brian Michael Bendis

Luke Cage led his eclectic team differently than any Avengers roster. They stayed closer to the ground while the others were in the star. Read this for the development of Luke and the most fun you’ll have reading an Avengers title. There’s action, banter, and a few emotional moments.

23. Messiah Complex/Second Coming

Writers: Ed Brubaker, Mike Carey, Peter David, Craig Kyle and Christopher Yost, Matt Fraction, Zeb Wells

The birth of Hope Summers throws the entire mutant world into chaos. Is she the mutant messiah? Is she connected to the Phoenix Force? What has she learned from Cable? How many people will die trying to protect her? Learn all of that here.

You won’t find another comic that hits harder emotionally.

22. Something is killing the Children

Writer: James Tynion IV

Writer James Tynion IV brings his dark creativity into the world of comic books. Monsters are killing children, but only kids can see them. It’s up to Erica Slaughter to protect them. Even if that means going against the people she’s sworn allegiance to.

21. Saga

Writer: Brian K. Vaughan

Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples created a universe of beings, unlike anything seen. Not just in comic books. That alone is enough to bring people in, but there’s more. Each tale hits on topics like racism, homophobia, and love (romantic and family) while giving readers action, adventure, and comedy.
