50 must-read Comic Books of the 2000s
By Mark Lynch
20. Black Panther
Writer: Ta-Nehisi Coates
Wakanda is as close to perfection as you can get. Their technological and medical advances are second to none. Writer Ta-Nehisi Coates challenges that in a lot of ways. Among them is discovering that the African nation isn’t as flawless as it seems.
19. Annihilation
Writer: Keith Giffen
War is brutal, deadly, and exhausting ( both mentally and physically). Now, imagine that on an intergalactic level. That’s Annihilation. Leading the charge against the Annihilation Wave and Thanos are Richard Ryder (Nova), Gamora, Peter Quill (without the humor), and the Kl’rt the Super Skrull.
Prepare for a fight that hasn’t been topped in Marvel Comics.
18. Red Hood and the Outlaws
Writer: Scott Lobdell
Once Jason Todd officially jumped to anti-hero (and not a Batman villain), he rose to stardom. He didn’t do it on his own. In each of his runs, he had two partners helping him. First, it was Arsenal and Starfire. Later it was Artemis and Bizarro.
These are two separate series written by the same person. This explains why the vibe of action, friendship, and overcoming your insecurities remained intact.
17. Wicked and the Divine
Writer: Kieron Gillen
(the best art of all time)
If you enjoy a good mystery, The Wicked and the Divine is perfect for you. Just when you think you know what’s going on, you find out you’re wrong. Combined with the best art on this list, it’s a comic book run you’ll never forget.
16. Moon Knight
Writer: Charlie Huston
After decades of being a mediocre hero, Charlie Huston came in and made Moon Knight a phenomenal character. He was given multiple personalities and a revised backstory, and he became more aggressive. Khonshu being a real deity helped as well. From then on, Moon Knight became someone that Marvel trusted.
