Superman and Lois

Without question the best superhero show to grace television in the past two decades, Superman and Lois has rightfully earned itself critical acclaim for its clever reinvention of the age-old Superman and Lois Lane story. The series is spun out of The CW's Arrowverse but it's nothing like its predecessors, choosing to focus primarily on the characters at the heart of it instead of the typical conventions of these shows (filler episodes, villains-of-the-week etc.).

Superman and Lois centers on Clark Kent and Lois Lane's family, as the reporting duo and their twin sons move back to Smallville in order to get away from the noise of Metropolis and grow closer as a family. It does work, strengthening their bonds and presenting them with new opportunities as a family. But it also presents them with new challenges, from adjusting to new jobs, new schools, and new lives, to balancing heroics with being full-time parents. The result is admirable, as Clark and Lois' story has never had more heart than it does here.

However, in spite of strong viewership for The CW and success outside of the US, the show is ending with its fourth and final season in 2024. There are a number of reasons for that and none of them have anything to do with the show, as new leadership at both The CW Network and Warner Bros. Discovery have led to a number of direction changes. With The CW now looking to produce cheaper content and DC Studios wanting one single shared universe that kicks off with a Superman movie, the decision was made to end the show after four seasons.

Its final season has been nothing short of spectacular, showcasing a powerful feud between Lex Luthor and Lois Lane that has led to the show adapting The Death of Superman arc, making Doomsday a key player, and setting in motion the arrival of Brainiac. All incredible reasons as to why the series deserved a much, much longer run.
