If you watched the Super Bowl, pre-show, Kendrick Lamar's strong statement, game highlights or even the Puppy Bowl, you saw that "Nerd Nation" had some fun during America's advertising red carpet.
How did they do? Did the trailers or appearances help their cause for box-office supremacy? It's a daring feat to try this, but Bam Smack Pow lives up to our late 1960s Batman-inspired onomatopoeia sound bubble brand. We fight the status quo, so here's a ranking of the nerd commercials featured during Super Bowl LIX.
New teaser for Guy Gardner in James Gunn’s ‘SUPERMAN’

5. Superman
DC Universe fans had Animal Planet set on their DVR probably for the first time in ever to get another sneak peek of Superman, Krypto, or anything related to the new effort from DC Studios. And instead, we got the same teaser with no new footage, and a quick shot of Nathan Fillion's Guy Gardner (because he has a "bowl" haircut). Albeit, James Gunn talking Krypto and kennel awareness is important, and the Puppy Bowl XXI was full of more cuteness.
While it was fun to see Gunn and his dog Ozu presenting the "Krypto Super Play", the lack of new footage on such a major stage as this made for a lackluster night considering everything DC fans expected from this opportunity.
4. Captain America: Brave New World
We only have days left to the biggest release on the most romantic day of the year (because what's more romantic on Valentine's Day than a gigantic rage Hulk?). Without giving away too much like Marvel already has about the new film Captain America: Brave New World, there was one more inch to make it to that full mile.
It's time to hack some Oxi Boost Tide detergent! Um, what? Yes, with Marvel releasing a brand new trailer for a different MCU film, Cap 4 got the Tide marketing tie-in ad instead.
"The most powerful clean in any universe." Okay, Tide. We see you! Moving on, Marvel. (Yes, the bus was a little funny.)
3. Novocaine
Jack Quaid (The Boys, Companion) refers to it as a condition, but his friends believe that since he cannot feel pain, it qualifies him as a superhero. That's good enough for us! (medically speaking, that is called ""Congenital insensitivity to pain")
Also starring Amber Midthunder (Prey), who is kidnapped in a robbery attempt, Novocaine is more of a spoof CBM (think Hancock or Mystery Men) where the guy with a rare genetic condition risks it all for the girl he is destined to be with in the end. Who's game?
2. Thunderbolts*
Marvel's rendition of The Suicide Squad is here. This Super Bowl trailer for Thunderbolts* gave much more meat to chew on and prepare this heroic motley crew. So, let's talk "Bob."
We finally got a glimpse of the caped man in the shadows, but nothing featured what Sentry possesses. Lewis Pullman (Top Gun: Maverick, Outer Range) takes the role of one ultra-powerful mutant villain. As canon shares, Robert Reynolds' alter-ego gets his name from the classified project following WWII when former Nazi scientists were still trying to recreate Steve Rogers' super soldier juice. Now, thanks to the sun, he has the same powers as some dude in spandex and a cape from DC.
One problem is that Bob has serious mental health issues, so his personality splits, and he also takes form with the same powers as "The Void." That is who we see threatening the Thunderbolts in the trailer. "You thought you were going to be some great saviors. You can't even save yourselves."
This looks promising. Now, if only we could figure out the asterisk.
1. Jurassic World Rebirth
Just when we thought all the mojo was drained from this damp blanket, something strange happened. The latest addition to the Jurassic World and Park saga (seven in all) literally did what the trailer said it would do--it was reborn.
This Super Bowl trailer looked dope. No schmaltzy lines. No man vs. beast plotholes so large that Steven Spielberg could drive an 18-wheeler through. This seems as terrifying as the original. Those reject dinosaurs look gruesome, and we are here for it!
