Some of your favorite video games may be heading to the small screen with these upcoming adaptations. There was a time when video game adaptations were seen as destined to fail, but television has changed that way of thinking. Shows like The Last of Us and Fallout have seen these games made into successful shows that are also critically acclaimed.
Not surprisingly, this has opened up new interest in the genre, and there are plenty more on their way. These upcoming video game shows will bring some truly iconic characters to life, while also showing the varied collection of stories that are told in the genre. These shows will not only excite fans of the game but may also win over new fans.

Tomb Raider
Lara Croft is one of the most famous video game heroes of all time, so it is a little surprising that it has taken so long to see her get a live-action show. Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander have played Lara on the big screen. Game of Thrones' Sophie Turner will step into the role in the upcoming Tomb Raider series.
Coming from Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge, this promises to be an exciting adventure that also mixes in humor and a strong central character. Tomb Raider's cast is also getting more and more impressive, with Jason Isaacs and Sigourney Weaver having also joined the adventure. While no release date has been announced, Tomb Raider will be premiering on Amazon Prime.

God of War
Starting in 2016, God of War has become a massive video game franchise with nine installments to date. The story follows Kratos, a powerful Spartan warrior whose mission of vengeance leads him to become the ruthless God of War.
While the franchise began by focusing on Greek mythology, the upcoming Amazon Prime series will focus on the Norse era of the games. The project is coming together quickly from The Expanse creators Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby. It was also recently announced that Ryan Hurst has been cast as Kratos, having previously played Thor in God of War Ragnarök.

Assassin's Creed
Assassin's Creed is another video game franchise with an expansive, history-spanning story. The franchise follows a shadowy group of warriors doing battle through time, influencing or protecting some of the most pivotal moments in history. While the 2016 movie adaptation starring Michael Fassbender was a letdown for many, television sounds like a better place for the adaptation.
Netflix has teamed with the video game developer Ubisoft to bring this series to life. Production is currently taking place in Italy, which is also reported to be the setting for the series. Much like the games, the series has the opportunity to take place in a new time period with each new season.

Mass Effect
Amazon Prime has certainly committed to the rise in video game shows as the streamer has another big project in development. Mass Effect is a massive sci-fi story that follows humans and aliens who band together when a race of machines invades the galaxy.
After a long wait for the rights to be acquired, there is some movement on the Mass Effect series, as Doug Jung (The Chief of War) has been announced as the showrunner. It is also reported that the show will not be a direct adaptation of the trilogy of games, and is reported to take place after the events of the games.
Far Cry
One of the wildest video game franchises is also heading to television with a very exciting team behind the scenes. FX has announced an adaptation of Far Cry, and they have locked in some major FX talent to help it become a reality. Rob Mac (It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia) will team with Noah Hawley (Alien: Earth) to develop the show.
Far Cry has several installments so far and even more spinoffs, but the games do not necessarily share a connected narrative. Instead, these first-person shooter games throw the players into deadly wilderness scenarios where they have to fight their way to survival. Interestingly, the series will attempt to capture the somewhat random nature of the franchise by telling it as an anthology series.
