6 major takeaways we have after the phenomenal Peacemaker season 2

Now that season 2 of HBO Max’s Peacemaker has ended, what’s next for Christopher Smith, Emilia Harcourt, and the rest of the 11th Street Kids, and when and where will we see them next?

The internet has been split on the season finale of Peacemaker. I thought it was great. If I had to guess, most negative responses were probably because the previous episodes were so good. That and the ending left a lot of questions. Since there’s no episode soon, let’s look at what you need to know going forward, starting with some sad news.

As of now, there are no plans for a third season. However, James Gunn stated that he has plans for the show’s cast. This shouldn’t surprise anyone since Gunn always has returning performers in his projects. Plus, the reveal of the new agency could be on the way.

"Some of these characters will continue, but also, it’s not exactly Peacemaker 3. I’m not ruling it out. You’ll see (episode) 8 and maybe you’ll find out a little bit more."
James Gunn

So, while there might not be a third season of Peacemaker for the foreseeable, that doesn't rule out the returns of these characters. And with that, let's dive into some takeaways we have after the finale.

Checkmate is born

Checkmate is a covert operation that deals mostly with superpowered activity. Some of the members from the group in DC Comics, like Sasha Bordeaux, Adrian Chase (Vigilante), and Christopher Smith (Peacemaker), are indeed characters in the DC Universe thanks to Peacemaker. And with the cast being so perfect, it only makes sense that the show would go from a program based on Smith to being titled after the group.

Could we see a Checkmate series down the line?

Keith Smith will likely return

Christopher Smith may have lost access to interdimensional travel, but his alternate universe brother Keith hasn’t. That means, regardless of what the next project featuring this cast is (be that Waller, a Checkmate series, or something else entirely), we haven’t seen the last of him.

He’s motivated enough to go after his alternate reality brother for the death of his father and real sibling. But it’s amplified thanks to Emilia Harcourt trying to kill him. She wasn't successful, so her decision-making here could become a problem for her in another project down the line.

Salvation is not at hand!

Rick Flag Sr. took the reality-hopping device known as the Quantum-Unfolding Tunnel and used it to find a place to put superhuman criminals in - all at the command of Lex Luthor. It shouldn’t shock anyone to know that he tricked Chris into signing something to become a volunteer and ultimately used that to get him thrown into the prison known as Salvation.

Flag wanted revenge for his son's death (Rick Flag Jr. was murdered by Peacemaker in The Suicide Squad). Now, Smith is stuck in an Elseworld with something howling in the distance.

Who’s the next interdimensional inmate?

Peacemaker won’t be the last person to end up in the interdimensional prison. Even if Flag Sr. did all of this to punish Chris, the U.S. Government will absolutely use their new prison - especially if they are working with Lex Luthor. For one, they can disappear people without getting courts involved and then say the place doesn’t exist. It sounds like something Amanda Waller would do.

Speaking of which...

Return of the Queen

Oh, you thought Amanda Waller was done? No way. First of all, James Gunn has confirmed that he’s he's still working on the Amanda Waller project (currently titled Waller). Secondly, everything Rick Flag Sr. is doing will get him in trouble. When he’s fired (or killed), Waller will return to run things behind the scenes. That’s if she’s not already doing that.

The new Dynamic Duo

Lastly, the Peacemaker season finale gave viewers a teaser of something great. We saw Langston Fleury ( played by Tim Meadows) and Adrian Chase (Freddie Stroma) interacting, and it was fantastic. Alone, they were hilarious. Together, they’ll be epic. Maybe Adrian can help Langston with his bird blindness. Stay tuned to Bam Smack Pow to see if that happens.
