The dragon fire is smouldering, the battle lines have been drawn, and the war is almost upon audiences all over the world. That's just the upcoming third season of House of the Dragon we're talking about! Before we get to that, we get to have some fun in another Game of Thrones spinoff series, as the long-awaited Dunk and Egg show - A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms - is upon us!

If you're an avid reader of George R. R. Martin's legendary A Song of Fire and Ice book series, you've probably read the Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas - and therefore know where it takes place in the ambitious Game of Thrones timeline. However, if you haven't read it, that might understandably leave you with some questions. Thankfully, we're here to answer some of them.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms' place on the Game of Thrones timeline, explained

So, is A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms a Game of Thrones prequel series? Yes. If we're talking about the Game of Thrones series itself, then yes, the Dunk and Egg spinoff is indeed a prequel series, taking place 100 years before GoT.

In terms of where it fits in in the overall GoT timeline, that's where things get a little more complicated. We will say that A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms takes place between the events of House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones, making it the middle of the three properties (despite being the most recent). HotD primarily takes place between the years of 129 and 131 AC while A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms takes place around 90 years after the events of that show. And then, as we stated above, it also takes place 100 years before the rise of Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones.

Here's a more detailed breakdown of the Game of Thrones Timeline:

Show in chronological order

Placement on the GoT timeline

House of the Dragon

112 AC - 132 AC

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

209 AC

Game of Thrones

298 AC - 305 AC

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms focuses on the early days of Ser Duncan the Tall's story, showcasing his time as a Hedge Knight. In doing so, it reveals how he comes across Egg - who agrees to be his squire - and the two form an unlikely friendship from there. Duncan is referenced by Joffrey in Game of Thrones in a statement that implies he is extremely well thought-of in the years and decades since his time on Earth. Now, we get to see where it all begins and how he ultimately becomes a legend.

As the Game of Thrones franchise continues to expand, you can rest assured that there will be more questions about where each of the installments take place on its overall timeline. That just goes to show you the everlasting appeal of this enduring franchise.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms airs on HBO and streams on HBO Max on Sunday nights.
