It feels like I’m always writing something about DC Comics’ Absolute Universe being unhinged. Sometimes it’s news about something crazy happening in the story, like James Gordon dying in Absolute Batman No. 19 or King Shazam being created in a gruesome way (Absolute Superman No. 18). There are more examples of the wild things happening in the Absolute Universe, and Absolute Green Arrow shows that things are just beginning.
When it came out that Absolute Green Arrow would be about a serial killer murdering creepy billionaires, I knew an article would be coming when the first issue dropped, and here we are. Issue one was a banger for a variety of reasons. However, before we get into this issue, let’s go back to Absolute Evil.
At the beginning of Absolute Evil, readers see Oliver Queen training to be the vigilante we know as Green Arrow. He tells Roy Harper (who's on the other end of his call) that he’s going after someone named Jubal Slade, who is (pardon the pun) an absolute monster.
Ollie talks about Jubal Slade's private plane to an island with children on board and how he isn't getting arrested because he bought off cops (it's very Jeffrey Epstein). Sadly, before Queen could become the Green Arrow, he was killed by Hawkman and had his dead body displayed in front of the Justice League (Grimm/Joker, Ra’s al Ghul, Veronica Cale, Elenore Thawne, and Hector Hammond). This brings us to Absolute Green Arrow No. 1.
At the beginning of the issue, readers see Jubal drinking wine and bragging about how he has security to protect him. That thought quickly vanished when someone with a mask that resembled Oliver Queen’s face and shooting green arrows came in and killed his security. The latter became interesting because Queen’s company was called Green Arrows Trading.
It's later learned that Slade was dismembered before he was killed. This leads to an ex-cop and MMA fighter named Dinah Lance getting hired to protect more vile billionaires. Dinah (Black Canary to most fans) also happens to be Ollie's ex-girlfriend, who believes that Oliver was a good man trying to do right by regular people in the world. That gets tricky when you get to the end of the issue.
This is going to be another banger from DC Comics’ Absolute Universe. As of now, this is only a six-issue series. But the same thing was said about Absolute Martian Manhunter, and it was extended to 12 issues (all of which have been phenomenal). There’s no doubt in my mind that this will be a popular series thanks to an intriguing mystery, brilliant writing, and brutally beautiful artwork.
