Absolute Wonder Woman's lasso is DC Comics' strongest weapon

Writer Kelly Thompson may have created the greatest comic book weapon in Absolute Wonder Woman No. 5, but using it comes with a price.

What are the greatest weapons in comics? The Lantern’s Power Rings, the Helmet of Fate, the All-Seeing Eye of Agamotto, and, of course, Mjolnir are the ones that come to mind. One weapon that’s overlooked is Wonder Woman’s Lasso of Truth. Beyond being unbreakable, it can make anyone tell the truth. That might seem weak if you don't understand how powerful the truth is.

You can learn secrets and weaknesses that could destroy or raise countries and then some. The truth can bring the most powerful beings to their knees and make them cry. People should be lucky that Wonder Woman is a hero who believes in peace first. During Absolute Wonder Woman No. 5, writer Kelly Thompson may have created a lasso that’s stronger than any weapon in comics and it’s not even close.

In DC Comics' Absolute Universe, Diana had a different upbringing. She was raised in Hell by Circe after Apollo and the rest of the gods banished Amazons from the world. At first, Circe planned on leaving baby Diana to die. As time went on, Circe loved her like she birthed her. While raising Diana, Circe became a more loving mother and taught Diana to be the best fighter and sorceress possible. Another thing she did was create a new green lasso θυσία which translates to Sacrifice (not to be confused with the red lasso in the earlier issues).

"Diana, not every thing you meet will decide to be your best friend. Many will try to kill you even before shoving away your hand of friendship."

Circe tells Diana that θυσία will hold and transform anything. However, she also says, “But what she (Sacrifice) holds determines the shape of that transformation." The first time Diana used it, she hated it. She didn’t understand why her mother would make her a weapon like this because it was cruel. As Circe pointed out, not everything Diana meets will be her friend.

After speaking to Hecate, Diana learned how cruel she was to her mother. Right after, she apologizes and Circe shares a beautiful moment that changes the way she thinks about θυσία. And she's lucky. Without that lesson, Diana wouldn't have used θυσία to become a giant Medusa to defeat the Tetracide.

Unfortunately, Wonder Woman was almost left as Medusa. Thankfully, she has her friends to remind her who she is. She’s The Hero of Gateway City, Last of the Amazons, and Witch of the Wild Isle. And with that, she became human again and destroyed the Tetracide that she turned to stone.

This won’t be the last time she uses θυσία and it may not be as easy to change back. Imagine what she’ll transform into next time. Maybe that’s how Barbara Minerva becomes Cheetah.
