Marvel continues to be a powerhouse across TV, movies, comic books, and video games. However, the fate of some of its projects isn't as certain as it once was. Multiple Marvel Cinematic Universe movies have been delayed or canceled altogether as the studio drew closer to the end of its ongoing Multiverse Saga. A similar scenario also occurred in television, as Daredevil: Born Again will come to an end next year and shows like Armor Wars never came to be. Even then, it seems the video game industry is the most volatile right now.

Marvel has tried to expand its reach into video game consoles to varying degrees of success. On the one hand, titles like Marvel's Spider-Man 2 and MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls have been released to critical acclaim. On the other hand, the Black Panther solo game was canceled, and we haven't had a proper update on Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra for months now. To make things worse, yet another project could be axed just as it is nearing completion.

Marvel's Blade could be canceled unless developer Arkane Lyon finds a new buyer

Nearly three years ago, Marvel and Xbox announced Marvel's Blade, an upcoming single-player action-adventure game that promises to take players on a bloody adventure in the heart of a vampire-infested Paris. Ever since the reveal trailer dropped, Marvel and the studio have gone silent, refusing to release another sneak peek of the project (other than a few concept art images). While fans assumed it was only a matter of time before we saw more of the game, there's a scenario in which that never turns out to be the case.

Xbox underwent a significant restructuring on July 16, 2026, which resulted in the departure of four studios and the layoffs of approximately 3,200 employees. Among those affected is Arkane Lyon, which found itself in a position where it needs to find a new buyer before Nov. 13, 2026, to keep its 217 employees afloat.

With such a tight deadline, fans assumed the worst, and fears about the studio's permanent closure—along with the cancellation of Marvel's Blade—began to arise. On the bright side, Microsoft has since extended that deadline by a month, as revealed by a company representative during an interview with PC Gamer:

"We have extended the consultation period by one additional month as we explore options, including finding a partner to support the studio through the development work still ahead. This is a defined extension, and we remain committed to keeping the Works Council informed throughout the process."

In a publication by the French newspaper Le Monde, an Arkane Lyon union representative revealed that Marvel's Blade is "nearing the end" of production, stating that it would be "a monumental waste" if the game never saw the light of day. Fortunately, it seems the studio may have a bright future ahead of it.

According to reliable industry insider Jason Schreier, Arkane Lyon is exploring multiple paths in which it would remain open:

"Anything can happen during negotiations, but at this point I'd be surprised if the studio is shut down. One important piece of context that many people might not realize: Shutting down a game studio is expensive. Shutting down a French game studio—thanks to labor laws requiring an extended severance period—is VERY expensive. Xbox doesn't want to take on those costs."

While the fate of Arkane Lyon and Marvel's Blade hangs in the air, let's hope that this is just remembered as a turbulent time in the studio's history and that Marvel's Blade eventually sees the light of day (unlike the vampires set to star in it).
