The original Avatar: The Last Airbender ran on Nickelodeon from 2005 to 2008 and is often recognized as the best show ever produced by that network. The titular hero Aang was twelve years old when he awoke from a deep freeze after a hundred years, similar to Captain America. Aang mastered all four elements before defeating the treacherous Fire Nation. 20 years later, the new animated movie will resume the airbender’s story, with Aang now an adult.

Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender is a full-length film that will release on Paramount Plus on July 25, 2026. While this is certainly a surprise announcement for a quickly approaching launch date, the news does come after a number of delays. Originally slated for theatrical distribution in late 2025 and then early 2026, the most recent expectation was for the movie to come out in October 2026. The most considerable change, aside from the sudden shift from October to July, is that the film will now be strictly on streaming.

Variety reports that Avatar Studios, a division of Nickelodeon Animation, may have felt forced to make these adjustments after portions of the film were leaked to the public. This can ultimately be a disappointment to Airbender fans who looked forward to a rewarding cinematic event – M. Night Shyamalan’s live-action The Last Airbender (in summer 2010) was widely repudiated by both the core fanbase and general moviegoing audiences. Alas, the opportunity to watch the new movie in just a matter of weeks should be cause for celebration, with lucky San Diego Comic-Con attendees granted the chance to see it a day or two early.

Even though Avatar Aang will be a direct continuation of the original series, a successful sequel has already played out on Nickelodeon, called The Legend of Korra. Korra was Aang’s avatar successor, meaning Aang was no longer alive during that story. Aang’s son, Tenzin, was a main character and a master Airbender who trained Korra in the once dying art form. So the new release, Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender, will likely fill some gaps between the first Avatar show and The Legend of Korra.

Avatar fever is out in full force these days; besides the brand-new animated movie coming our way, Netflix recently dropped the second season of the live-action depiction of the animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender. Just like the original, the plan is for the show to produce three "books." The Netflix series is clearly the superior (of two) live-action offerings. It might be slightly confusing to those not familiar with the property to learn that there are completely separate airbender entities airing on Netflix and Paramount Plus around the same time, but it shouldn’t be too difficult to enjoy each portrayal on their own.

Next up for Avatar Studios, another animated show called Avatar: Seven Havens is in development for 2027. The showrunners have revealed that the plot will take place after The Legend of Korra and will feature her avatar replacement. Beyond that, other animated movies could be greenlit, although that may depend on the reception for Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender.
