Avengers: Doomsday to bring back fallen MCU heroes, reports say

Fans thought they had seen the last of these heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but that may be far from the case.

For the past seven years, no threat in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been dangerous enough to warrant the return of Earth's Mightiest Heroes. In the group's stead, smaller team-ups have played out on the big screen, such as the time when three multiversal iterations of Spider-Man came together to stop the Sinister Five, or when Monica Rambeau, Captain Marvel, and Ms. Marvel joined forces to stop an intergalactic threat. For the most part, the multiverse as a whole has managed to stay afloat without the Avengers' intervention. But soon enough, almost every single hero introduced in the franchise will be called to action, and even that may not be enough to stop what's coming.

Avengers: Doomsday is just around the corner. In a matter of months, audiences will watch the multiverse as a whole collapse and potentially be rebuilt in the image of Doctor Doom. For the first time in years, Earth's Mightiest Heroes will need to assemble on the big screen, and they will need all the help they can get if they want to have a chance of stopping the Ruler of Latveria. Characters we thought we'd never see again—such as Steve Rogers and variants of the original X-Men—will make their long-awaited comebacks. Furthermore, it seems another group of forgotten MCU characters could also join their ranks.

Heimdall, Jane Foster, and more Asgardians will reportedly appear in Avengers: Doomsday

The strength of the All-Father could turn the tide in favor of Earth's Mightiest Heroes. According to reliable insider Alex Perez (via The Cosmic Circus), some Asgardians we haven't seen since Thor: Ragnarok will aid Thor during the events of Avengers: Doomsday. Furthermore, industry scooper MyTimeToShineHello revealed that Natalie Portman's Jane Foster and Idris Elba's Heimdall will cameo in the movie.

During the second Avengers: Doomsday teaser trailer, we hear Thor's sentimental monologue asking Odin for help. So, perhaps it is after this moment that the Asgardians answer the God of Thunder's plea and arrive on Earth to aid in the fight to come.

"Father, all my life, I have answered every call: to honor, duty, to war. Now fate has given me something I never sought: a child. A life untouched by the storm. Lend to me the strength of the All-Fathers, so that I might fight once more, defeat one more enemy, and return home to her (...) Please, Father, hear my words."

The last time we ever saw Mighty Thor and Heimdall was during the post-credits scene of Thor: Love and Thunder back in 2022, where the two reunited in Valhalla—the afterlife for Asgardian warriors. This sequence was meant to tease that the story of these characters was far from over, prompting fans to believe that perhaps Thor himself would fall in battle during an Avengers film and reunite with his former friends. Fortunately, it seems they will come to him instead.

It isn't a new strategy for Marvel to summon pre-existing groups of characters to the big fights. The same scenario happened in Avengers: Endgame, where the Asgardians, sorcerers, and Wakandans helped Earth's Mightiest Heroes fight against Thanos and his army. With this precedent in mind, there's a chance that a similar scenario will be in store once again, especially now that the Talokanil have also entered the picture under Namor's reign.

The final confrontation in Avengers: Doomsday could be a huge battle involving Earth's Mightiest Heroes, the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, the New Avengers, Wakandans, and Asgardians against Doctor Doom and his army of sentinels. Unfortunately, Jane Foster, Heimdall, and anyone else alongside them will likely return to Valhalla after the fight is over, leaving the God of Thunder to his own devices once again. However, it will be nice to see them reunited for one last stand.

Avengers: Doomsday will be released on Dec. 18, 2026.
