The superhero landscape hasn't been the same ever since Earth's Mightiest Heroes assembled on the big screen back in 2012. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has reached new levels of commercial success with every new installment in its Avengers franchise, and a new record was set with the release of Endgame—the final project in the Infinity Saga and one of the most ambitious crossovers ever attempted on the big screen.
Avengers: Endgame quickly became the highest-grossing superhero movie of all time and has since sat on that throne for years, much like Thanos before erasing half of the life in the universe. However, Tony Stark said it best: "Part of the journey is the end."
We knew it was only a matter of time before a new challenger took the spot of Earth's Mightiest Heroes. But while it would've been easy to assume that a bigger superhero crossover would be needed to dethrone Avengers: Endgame, it turns out that a teenager from Queens could do it on his own.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day could outgross Avengers: Endgame by the end of its theatrical run
It's time to make some space, because the wall-crawler is coming out swinging. Spider-Man: Brand New Day has grossed $1.72 billion at the worldwide box office two weeks after its international release and is currently the highest-grossing film of 2026 by a considerable margin. The Odyssey currently sits in second place at $1.12 billion, although estimates suggest Christopher Nolan's latest movie will end its theatrical run somewhere between $1.4 and $1.5 billion.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is on track to reach the $2 billion mark worldwide during its third weekend in theaters, and projections suggest it will be the first movie ever to cross $1 billion domestically. Things look even more promising when looking at the bigger picture, as the latest MCU project is estimated to end its theatrical run grossing $2.5 to $2.7 billion.
There's a chance the wall-crawler's latest adventure will match and even outgross Avengers: Endgame, which currently sits at $2.79 billion at the worldwide box office. If so, then Spider-Man: Brand New Day would become the highest-grossing superhero film of all time and the second-biggest movie ever behind Avatar (2009).
There is a key factor to take into consideration. Avengers: Endgame was re-released with additional footage (mainly a Hulk scene with unfinished VFX) and an introductory message from co-director Anthony Russo back in 2019. With this re-release, the crossover brought in an additional $5.5 million to its total box office run. Now, a similar scenario is bound to happen once more, as Avengers: Endgame will be re-(re-)released in September 2026. So even if Spider-Man: Brand New Day briefly manages to surpass it, Earth's Mightiest Heroes are likely to take the crown right back.
Regardless of the case, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is set to become the biggest standalone superhero project ever, with its predecessor, Spider-Man: No Way Home, taking second place at $1.9 billion. Outside the Spider-Man and Avengers franchises, Black Panther is the next biggest superhero movie with $1.34 billion.
The MCU has even brighter days ahead of it with the impending release of Avengers: Doomsday. Earth's Mightiest Heroes will finally return to the big screen after a seven-year hiatus, and their return is already being welcomed by fans. The upcoming crossover currently holds the record for the highest first-day pre-sales, with some venues reportedly selling out for early Thursday showings. So even if Spider-Man: Brand New Day isn't able to surpass Endgame after the latter's re-release, then Doomsday might.
The MCU has bright days ahead, and it's just a matter of weeks before we discover where the wall-crawler's latest adventure ranks in the worldwide superhero box office.
