If we were to enumerate the many things the Batman: Arkham franchise has done right, we'd probably be here all day. Many developers copied its innovative free-flow combat for years because of how engaging it is. Furthermore, it has one of the best atmospheres out of any video game franchise, filled with countless secrets and interesting lore details in every corner. As if that wasn't enough, it has a jaw-dropping narrative that, more often than not, will surprise even the most hardcore of fans.

But even though there are many things to praise about the Batman: Arkham franchise, boss fights are rarely one of them. More often than not, players will play through underwhelming battles that will be forgotten as soon as they are over. However, there is always an exception to the rule and—in this case—we find ourselves with five amazing exceptions. But before we begin, it's worth noting that the Scarecrow encounter in Batman: Arkham Asylum didn't appear on this list because it isn't technically a boss fight (even if it is an amazing sequence nonetheless).

So, without further ado, here are the five best boss fights in the Batman: Arkham saga.

5. Firefly

Game: Batman: Arkham Origins

A boss fight is made up of many different elements. There needs to be an epic soundtrack playing in the background to make players' hearts race. More often than not, there should be high stakes that make the encounter all the more nerve-wracking. Cinematic moments can also add a lot of depth to the boss, and of course, gameplay mechanics should be the star of the show. Fortunately, the Firefly boss in Arkham: Origins checks every element on the list.

Superhero fans know that iconic battles always take place on a bridge (though we don't ask Spider-Man what happens after the fight). So what if said bridge was on fire, collapsing, and holding a bomb that could explode at any moment? That's just the setup of the Firefly boss. Once the encounter begins, you'll have to continuously dodge his attacks while making the most of Batman's gadgets to get the villain closer to the ground.

Midway through the boss, there's a bit of an "intermission" in which you play through an Uncharted-esque sequence where Batman has to run away from a collapsing structure while dodging many attacks coming his way. Once the Caped Crusader finally reaches solid ground again, the boss keeps on going. To cap things off, you'll be treated to a fantastic sequence where Batman grapples onto Firefly, and the two fly all around the bridge set on fire. And just in case you needed another reason to love this boss, its fallout leads to Batman and Jim Gordon finally working together in the Arkhamverse for the first time.

The fight's build-up was fantastic, the battle arena was stellar, the stakes were high, and the encounter culminated in an impactful narrative moment that changed the game moving forward. Simply put, this boss has it all.

4. Clayface

Game: Batman: Arkham City

Batman: Arkham Asylum was a fantastic game with next to no flaws, but there's no denying that its final boss was definitely one of its biggest weaknesses. As such, Rocksteady took notice of all the feedback and used it to deliver a fantastic finale in Batman: Arkham City.

There's a bit of an irony in having to battle a former actor in a big, decayed theater just after the Joker revealed that he's been playing you like a puppet. It's also very fitting that the whole sequence plays like a big literary tragedy. After all, everything starts with the death of Batman's love, and culminates with the passing of his biggest frenemy. In between that, there's an amazing boss where you'll go against a "giant enemy" that, for once, does more than simply send many of his minions your way.

Clayface is relentless, as he won't stop trying to attack you at any given time. Players will have to meticulously find an opening to throw freeze cluster grenades at the villain, but one false move is more than enough to see the game-over screen. What makes this boss all the more special is that Batman gets to use a sword in the third and final phase, unlocking a range of new attacks specifically tailored for this sequence.

The cherry on top is the culmination of the boss, which sees the Joker die right in front of the Dark Knight. The fact that such a well-crafted boss leads to such a shocking moment only makes us love it even more.

3. TN-1 Bane

Game: Batman: Arkham Origins

Batman: Arkham Origins has the best boss fights out of any Arkham title. Now, there are three different instances in which you'll get to battle Bane in the game, and while any of them could make a case for earning the third entry in this list, it is the last time you fight him that truly takes the cake.

The Batman: Arkham bosses can be generally grouped into one of two different categories: stealth fights, in which you'll have to strike the enemy before they see you, and direct face-to-face encounters. Fortunately, the TN-1 Bane boss manages to capture the best of both worlds. Things kick off very similarly to the previous times you faced Bane in the game. You'll have to divide your attention between dodging the villain's attacks and fighting hordes of henchmen in the arena. Eventually, you'll get the chance to stun Bane and land a few hits along the way.

The boss does a 180-degree turn once it hits its second phase, where Bane injects himself with enough Venom to turn him into an unrecognizable creature. You won't be able to fight him in hand-to-hand combat, so the only option is to try to hide and use the environment to your advantage. The only problem? You're stuck with this relentless monster in a very small arena.

The Batman: Arkham franchise does a fantastic job of making you feel like a predator hunting for villains that, most of the time, won't ever get to see you. However, the TN-1 Bane boss will make you feel like you are the prey for once, and that alone is enough to make it stand out above other encounters. However, there's another boss that encapsulates the very same feeling, except a little better.

2. Mr. Freeze

Game: Batman: Arkham City

I know what you're probably thinking: "How wasn't this boss ranked No. 1 even though it is stellar"? Well, for starters, you'd be right, there's no denying that this boss is absolutely fantastic. It is widely regarded as the best the franchise has to offer, and with good reason.

You can't try to fight Mr. Freeze directly because you'll lose. Instead, you'll have to rely on hiding and striking from the shadows, but there's one big problem: the villain learns from your every move. Did you use your detective vision a little too much? Mr. Freeze will use a jammer to deactivate it. Were you using the ground vents to attack from the ground? The villain will cover them with ice. You'll have to constantly come up with new ways to overpower your rival, which will truly make you feel as smart as Bruce Wayne once the fight is over.

Many bosses in the Batman: Arkham franchise try to implement this "hide-and-seek" formula, but none of them are as innovative or effective as Mr. Freeze. Better yet, you'll also feel like you're being hunted down by an unstoppable force of nature, which is no easy feat, especially when you're playing as someone as terrifying as Batman himself. Simply put, the Mr. Freeze battle is one for the ages, and it would very easily make its way to the top of this list if it weren't for...

1. Deathstroke

Game: Batman: Arkham Origins

While the Mr. Freeze boss is iconic, you can only play through it once or twice before it loses some of the magic as you start to memorize the many different ways in which you can damage the iconic villain. On the contrary, many gamers created a save file just before the Deathstroke fight just to experience it over and over again, which is a testament to how fantastic this boss is.

Unlike other iconic heroes, Batman can't rely on any superpowers to save himself from dangerous situations. Instead, the Caped Crusader relies on his advanced hand-to-hand combat skills to overpower any street-level or metahuman threat that comes his way. Better yet, many of the Caped Crusader's villains are able to match his abilities in return, making for memorable fights that no superhero fan would want to miss.

The Batman: Arkham saga is known for its inventive free-flow combat system, which allows players to punch, kick, and counter many henchmen simultaneously in a very intuitive way. As such, it is a shame that the saga (mostly) lacks any iconic hand-to-hand boss fights. What makes matters worse is that many enemies—such as Jason Todd and Ra's al Ghul—were definitely up for the task, yet their bosses didn't allow us to face them in close quarters, with no weapons other than perhaps a sword.

The Batman: Arkham saga usually relies on stealth bosses, which force you to hide and wait for the perfect moment to strike. Some of them work, and others become a little repetitive. However, there is one single boss that shines because it truly showcases the Dark Knight's fighting skills, and it is the encounter against Deathstroke in Arkham Origins.

The animations in this battle are stellar. Not only are they fast-paced, but they flow very naturally, even though it would be very easy for them to feel "chopped" when players suddenly use a gadget mid-fight or push Deathstroke to the limit of the battle arena. There isn't a single moment throughout this whole combat when you're allowed to take a breath. Your reflexes will be tested from the very first hit, and you'll constantly be looking for an opening to strike back.

Deathstroke will change weapons as the encounter goes by, switching from a steel bo staff
to a sword and even his own version of a grapple gun. This adds a whole new layer of variety to an already intricate fight. Better yet, you don't have to face regular henchmen during the boss, which means you can truly focus on defeating Deathstroke. But perhaps the biggest reason why the boss ranks at the No. 1 spot is that it is insanely fun, and isn't that what video games should be all about at the end of the day?
