Marvel Studios made a major impression when it first launched its Marvel Cinematic Universe TV shows on Disney Plus. The biggest blockbuster franchise in Hollywood history brought its larger-than-life presence to the small screen in 2021 with WandaVision, earning itself Emmy wins (and plenty more nominations), while also entertaining viewers with popular offerings like The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, What If...?, and Hawkeye.
However, there were some missteps on both the TV and movie side of things that resulted in the studio having to pare back its approach on the small screen and the silver one. And with that, reports surfaced of some projects being either shelved or cancelled while others were delayed to ensure that they would be as perfect as possible when they were released into the world.
The reports and rumors will likely just remain rumors until Marvel confirms otherwise, but there is one project that both the studio and the Disney Plus streaming service have ceased producing. And that's a real shame.
Marvel Studios: Assembled ceases releasing episodes
There have been multiple big-budget Marvel Studios releases on both the big and small screen this year, but there has been something missing from all of them: The companion episode of the long-running streaming show Marvel Studios: Assembled. In fact, there hasn't been a single episode of the show released since the last live-action MCU project of 2024.
Debuting all the way back in March 2021, the first episode was "The Making of WandaVision" and, as the title implies, it pulled back the curtain on the first title of Phase Four, showing how Jac Schaeffer's magical show starring Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Bettany, and Kathryn Hahn came to be. The show has proceeded to release a new episode after every title within the Multiverse Saga (with the exception of second seasons of animated shows), continuing on into Phase Five. However, it all came to an end with last year's "The Making of Agatha All Along", which is pretty ironic considering Agatha is a WandaVision spinoff starring Kathryn Hahn.
The Agatha episode also made history as the first to release exclusively on YouTube, arriving on the Marvel Entertainment channel and amassing over 1 million views. It was never explained at the time as to why it was released on that channel and not on Disney Plus like the rest of the series, and it has also not yet been added to the streamer. The question is: Was this the last episode of the series?
Right now, it looks that way. Marvel Studios has since released Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts* in movie theaters, as well as Daredevil: Born Again, and animated series Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man on Disney Plus. And none of those titles have had episodes of the companion series to accompany it.
This is likely a sign of Marvel Studios pulling back as it continues to change its approach to its release strategy. If these types of programs don't generate the same level of engagement that they once did, the studio may have decided it was time to pull the plug. Then again, maybe with its focus on Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, it just hasn't gotten around to launching the 2025 episodes of Assembled just yet.
It is worth noting that it was previously thought that fellow Disney Plus companion series Marvel Studios Legends had been scrapped for not releasing any new episodes between 2023 and 2025, but it did recently stage a comeback with a new episode focused on the lead character of Ironheart, Riri Williams. With Ironheart itself's debut imminent, it's quite possible that an episode of Marvel Studios: Assembled could accompany it - after all, this show was filmed in 2022, which was the peak of the Marvel TV on Disney Plus era, so there is likely footage for when it was initially planned to be released.
We'll have to wait and see if Marvel Studios: Assembled ever stages a comeback but, for the moment, it's looking like it has gone the way of all those reportedly cancelled Marvel projects. And that's a real shame indeed.
