Prime Video has become one of the premier TV streaming services. With a host of bingeable dramas, from the likes of The Summer I Turned Pretty and the more recent Girlfriend to its larger-than-life fantasy shows such as The Wheel of Time and The Rings of Power, it has something for everyone. And in the midst of all of that, it has carved out a place for itself as the home of some of the most must-see science fiction fare on television.
Whether you're looking for more straightforward sci-fi like Fallout or the superhero kind like The Boys and Invincible, the streamer has you covered. And considering that it has generated a lot of buzz for this brand of show, that's not surprising. Unfortunately, it has brought about an unexpected end to one of them - right as it became incredibly pivotal to its line-up.
Prime Video cancels Gen V after two seasons
Unfortunately, it's the end of the road for Gen V. The streamer announced that the beloved The Boys spinoff series would not be returning for a third season, despite how pivotal it is to the overall "Vought Cinematic Universe" franchise right now.
The series was set in Godolkin University and it spotlighted the next generation of Supes (a.k.a. people with special abilities who could serve as superheroes if needed). In this universe, however, that doesn't necessarily mean you are a do-gooder - something that is evidenced by the mothership series itself.
This makes it the second series in this shared universe to close its doors in 2026 as The Boys itself is coming to an end this year after its fifth and final season. That season is currently streaming new episodes on the platform weekly, and it actually features stars from the spinoff - which isn't surprising to those who have been keeping up with both shows. It was made clear that particular characters from the spinoff would play a pivotal role in the final season of the Mothership, with fans theorizing that Jaz Sinclair's Marie Moreau would go up against Homelander.
That's what makes its recent cancellation all the more baffling. While the idea of the show being cancelled isn't the most unsurprising thing you'll ever hear - the second season didn't generate the same level of buzz as the first and it had been six months since the Amazon streamer shared any significant updates on its future - the timing of it is really quite outrageous.
The Boys has always existed in its own world. While Gen V did come along over halfway through its run, there was a plan to have them interact more down the line. The second season of Gen V laid the groundwork for that while The Boys season 5 has been pulling it off. It was all designed to showcase that there was a bigger world beyond the original series - and considering that it's ending shortly, it needed to do that.
Announcing Gen V's cancellation in the middle of The Boys season 5's run has completely taken the wind out of its sails. Yes, the season is living up to fans' expectations and the crossovers with Gen V are - and still will be - fun and exciting to see play out on our screens. But with a larger plan in place - that now ultimately won't happen because of the spinoff show's cancellation - it all feels a little less exciting. Couldn't we have waited just a few more weeks to announce that Gen V wouldn't return? What's that to the already six month wait for that decision on its future.
Granted, the Boys universe will still continue. Next spinoff Vought Rising, which is set to focus on the origins of the corrupt superhero-fronted corporation and be led by Jensen Ackles' Soldier Boy, is currently set for a 2027 release. And with that, there will be more stories to tell from Eric Kripke and Garth Ennis' gripping world. It's just a shame that Gen V season 3 won't be a part of that.
