Man's best friend applies to superheroes as well, as perhaps the most popular dog in the world of comics is none other than Krypto! While this high-energy, superpowered canine is no stranger to the world of superheroes and supervillains, arriving in 1955 via DC ComicsAdventure Comics No. 210, he's far from the center of attention when it comes to the likes of Superman.

For years, Krypto had made several appearances in television, video games, and films, but with the release of James Gunn's Superman, a whole new generation can discover and fall in love with the four-legged, loyal yet destructive force. His unmistakable yet subtle design of a white, short-haired dog breed, red cape, Superman symbol collar, and wagging tail in tow is nothing short of brilliant.

Of all of Krypto's appearances, we chose our five favorites from the likes of live-action DC television shows to the crossover of a lifetime! Our list has been compiled in release date order, starting with his most recent appearance.

Superman (2025)

Unruly, destructive, ready to play, loyal, strong, and a true puppy at heart, Krypto's most recent appearance in James Gunn's Superman has stolen the hearts of everyone, from adults to children alike. His likeness adorns nearly every piece of Superman merchandise from popcorn buckets to jewelry and stuffed animals.

While we will spare key spoilers for the film, we dare anyone to watch the film and not crack a smile at Krypto's antics. Whether it be to add more trouble for Superman (while balancing an already full plate) or to literally save the day upon the call of a high-pitched whistle, Krypto's screen time only enhanced the unfolding story.

He is one of the several reminders of how selfless and compassionate Superman is, proving the Last Son of Krypton is and will always be more than a superhero.

Scooby-Doo! and Krypto, Too! (2023)

Talk about the ultimate crossover between two of the most popular dogs in all of media! The easily scared, always hungry Great Dane Scooby-Doo has been captivating audiences since the first episode of Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! aired in 1969.

Together with Fred, Daphne, Velma and Shaggy, the gang travels in their van, the Mystery Machine, to solve mysteries mostly revolving around monsters, ghosts, and other supernatural beings. Since their television show, there have been a multitude of films (so many I've lost count), including Scooby-Doo! and Krypto, Too!.

As you can tell by the title, Scooby-Doo and the gang are thrust into the DC Universe where they become wrapped up in a mystery involving the disappearance of the Justice League. But don't worry, Krypto is here to join in the fun!

What we love most about this depiction of Krypto is his willingness and aptitude to help Scooby-Doo solve the mystery using his various superpowers to save the day! Not to mention his personality shines nearly as brightly as Scooby's, making them a perfect duo sure to delight fans of both franchises.

DC League of Super-Pets (2022)

Comic books are an interesting dynamic, as many find themselves telling stories aimed at either adults or children. Considering Krypto is a dog, he's an ideal icon for the children's/family-friendly side of DC.

In DC League of Super-Pets, Krypto is the main attraction when he's not sharing the scene with animal shelter rescue Ace. Krypto is the superpowered dog we know and love, but takes on more dog-like characteristics, including jealousy of his owner Superman/Clark Kent's relationship with Lois Lane.

When the Justice League finds themselves in trouble, it's up to Krypto, Ace, and a lot of other animals, who gain superpowers, to save the day. The best part, each animal gets adopted by a member of the Justice League by the end of the film.

The movie is a wonderful and hilarious story from the perspective of Krypto and his friends, covering themes of friendship, teamwork, along with a reminder of how amazing animals, especially pets, can be. They love us unconditionally, no strings attached, and that loyalty alone is worth more than the superpowers Krypto and the rest of the Super-Pets have combined.

Titans (2019)

As a fan of DC's Titans, it was a no-brainer; I had to watch the HBO Max show the moment I heard of its existence. A new take on Robin, Starfire, Raven, and Beast Boy (no Cyborg), was far from unexpected but what was, for me anyway, was Krypto's introduction.

Titans' cast was stocked, yet I never anticipated seeing the canine sidekick. Unlike other versions on our list, this Krypto was more stoic, steadfast, tame, yet just as powerful.

In Titans, we are introduced to Krypto alongside Subject 13, a.k.a. Conner a.k.a. Superboy, as test subjects at Cadmus Laboratories. Krypto, appearing nearly identically to his comic book roots, with the exception of the cape, becomes a close companion to Conner, joining the Titans team, complete with all of his usual superpowers of flight, heat vision, sonic scream, and super strength.

While Krypto is not the star of the show, his addition was a delight, as was his bond with Superboy.

Smallville (2005)

Smallville's version of Krypto is the most different and unique on our list. And we're not just talking about the name change.

Smallville was a brilliant show that holds some very fond memories of the early 2000s. Essentially a precursor to Superman, the coming-of-age show followed Clark Kent's adventures as a regular teen living in Smallville, Kansas.

Juggling friendships, relationships, school, and home life is difficult enough without mixing superpowers. Now, how about the addition of a superpowered dog?

The dog in question, Shelby, is heavily inspired by Krypto but only appears for one episode: season 4, episode 14 titled "Krypto". In this story, Krypto is an experiment from LuthorCorp, having found his way into the Kents' lives after accidentally getting hit by Lois' car.

In the episode, Krypto is a hairy, fluffy golden retriever who looks nothing like the superpowered pup from the comics. But that is what makes this version so likable.

Krypto doesn't need to follow an exact origin story, nor does he need to take on an exact appearance for him to be well remembered and beloved. He can just be an adorable, food-motivated, loyal companion who happens to have super strength, super healing, and enhanced senses, among other abilities.
