It's only a few days into the season, but some of the biggest anime series slated for the season have debuted. Reminder: Dan Da Dan season 2 is now live

In one of the first big debuts of the Summer 2025 anime season, the second season of award-winning Horror-Comedy series Dan Da Dan has debuted as of July 3. Fans got a first look at Dan Da Dan season two a month early in the form of the movie Evil Eye, which combined the first three episodes of the season into a feature-length movie. The second season of series is now streaming in earnest on both Netflix and Crunchyroll.

If you've forgotten, or never watched the first season, Crunchyroll's trailer for season two of Dan da Dan summarizes the series:

"When high schooler Momo, from a family of spirit mediums, first meets her classmate Okarun, an occult geek, they argue—Momo believes in ghosts but denies aliens, and Okarun believes in aliens but denies ghosts. When it turns out both phenomena are real, Momo awakens a hidden power and Okarun gains the power of a curse. Together, they must challenge the paranormal forces threatening their world."

HIDIVE announces more Summer 2025 dubs

Following last week's announcement of several of its debuting series and new dubs, HIDIVE has shared several more announcements via its social media platforms and website:

Along with the previous announcements of Call of the Night Season 2 and the continuation of Sword of the Demon Hunter: Kinjin Gentoushou, HIDIVE has announced that both of those series, along with Rock is a Lady's Modesty and Flower and Asura will receive English dubs on the streaming service throughout the summer and early fall.

Looking a little further along the year, HIDIVE has also announced that Fantasy series Hero Without a Class: Who Even Needs Skills?! will debut on the streaming service in the fall. However, the specific premiere date has not yet been announced. HIDIVE provides the following synopsis:

"In this world a goddess bestows each person with a class and skills that will determine one’s life direction. Despite being born the son of a Sword Princess and an Archmage, Arel has not received a class or skills. So, Arel must rely on his own grit, determination and natural talents to pursue and achieve greatness—becoming a new kind of hero. A hero without a class!"

Uzumaki home video release up for pre-order

The home video release, including a limited edition steelbook, or the anime adaptation of iconic mangaka Junji Ito's surreal Horror series Uzumaki is now up for pre-order via online retailer Gruv. The Blu-ray release of Uzumaki is currently scheduled to release on September 9.

Based on Ito's original manga series originally published across 1998 and 1999, the Uzumaki anime adaptation aired in North America on Adult Swim during the Fall 2024 anime season, becoming one of 2024's most talked-about anime series. However, it wasn't necessarily for good reasons. Although the Uzumaki anime adaptation was highly anticipated by fans, its production faced numerous delays after being initially announced in 2019. Following a strong first episode, subsequent episodes were criticized for shoddy animation.

It remains to be seen if the home video release of Uzumaki will receive any touch-ups or improvements, but fans will be able to judge the series's animation for themselves on September 9. In the meantime, the original manga series is available online through English-language publisher Viz Media's website and app.

Weekly anime recommendation: The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated!

You can tell Jahy is an important character when even the narrator constantly calls her "The Great Jahy". That one idea sums up a lot of the series's humor. Originally, Jahy was the second-in-command of the Dark Realm. After the Dark Realm is destroyed by a Sailor Moon-esque Magical Girl, Jahy ends up trapped on Earth living a hilariously mundane life as a waitress to pay rent for a shabby, one-room apartment.

The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated! is what's called a Reverse Isekai anime: instead of a character from our world ending up in another world, a character from another world ends up in ours. The fact that even broke, starving and having no success in her mission to restore the Dark Realm (the Japanese writing on Jahy's shirt even reads "Restore the Dark Realm"), Jahy never completely discards her imperious Fantasy-genre Dark Lord personality, which creates a lot of funny moments when she's dealing with everyday human characters like her boss, her landlord, the police of the neighborhood children.

On the other hand, The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated! is a surprisingly inspiring series. Despite the constant setbacks she faces, Jahy never gives up — even though she probably should.. Similarly, Jahy's human friends, especially her boss, are so constantly supportive or Jahy that there are plenty of genuinely heartwarming moments.
