The mark of a good show is how it survives the test of time. Some programs do well when new episodes air and during syndication and streaming. Examples of those are classics like Friends, Seinfeld, and Martin. Then, you have projects like Buffy the Vampire Slayer that survived the test of time despite it seeming cheesy and the action not being up to today’s standard. But that’s just a testament to the great work of the actors and creative team.

Over the years, there have been comic books focusing on the Buffy-verse. There was Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Eight, which followed everything that happened after the season 7 finale of the show, and spinoffs starring Angel and Spike. Later, in 2023, Boom! Studios released Buffy the Last Vampire Slayer.

Despite the show being around for 28 years, people still crave Buffy, Willow, and Giles. You can tell because the show is getting a TV reboot and two new comic books (Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel) are being released by Dynamite Entertainment. To make it even better, both of the new Angel and Buffy the Vampire Slayer both being written by the amazing Eisner Award-winning Kelly Thompson.

So far, there isn’t any more news to go on. As this article is being written, we don’t even know who’s doing the interior art (the cover above was done by David Nakayama). Even though there isn’t much to go on, just having this written by Kelly Thompson is enough to get people pumped, and, from the quote above, you can see she’s just as excited to write it as we should be to read it.

For those of you unfamiliar with Kelly Thompson’s work, she’s currently writing Absolute Wonder Woman (which just won an Eisner Award for Best New Series) and Birds of Prey. Both comic books are among the best being published. Both of them star strong women saving the world from evil.

"She was somehow everything my young geek heart had always wanted but hadn’t known to ask for. Something about that delicate alchemy of horror, fantasy, and comedy paired with a hero so pure of heart and yet flawed and relatable was… impossible to deny."

Thompson is also a former Captain Marvel writer. In my opinion, that 50-issue run is the definitive story starring Carol Danvers. It showed that Carol isn’t as boring or stuck up as people think. There are layers to her that people rarely get to see. It’s doubtful I’d love Carol as much as I do without her.

Lastly, I wanted to end this with a quote from editor Nate Cosby as he adds more reasons to read this, saying, “There was one name on my wish list of writers for Buffy: Kelly Thompson. There was one name on my wish list of writers for Angel: Kelly Thompson. Her passion for these characters is second-to-none." That's high praise, and this writer agrees 100%.
