"Cancelled" Marvel character reportedly has "no future" in the MCU anymore

It's reportedly the end of a very short-lived era for the MCU.

Well it was fun while it lasted. At least that's what one major Marvel character might be thinking when contemplating their apparent future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The MCU is a well-oiled machine of a franchise, known for turning lesser-known comic book characters into global phenomenons. Look no further than the Guardians of the Galaxy, Black Panther, and Captain Marvel; all of whom became franchise headliners thanks to solo movies that launched their cinematic careers.

However, in recent years, that hasn't worked out quite as successfully for the Marvel Studios franchise, as a number of characters in its Multiverse Saga haven't resonated as well with audiences. And that unfortunately might be down to the fact that there were just too many titles to keep up with.

Now, it sounds like that could have had major repercussions on the future of one character in particular.

She-Hulk reportedly has "no big future" in the MCU

According to a new report from Marvel scooper account Marvel Update, She-Hulk has "no big future in the MCU". There is no elaboration as to whether that means we've seen the last of the character in general or if she could make a return in a more supporting capacity, but it does seem to support a number of recurring rumors about the character's fate.

Yes, it's important to take all rumors about Marvel in particular with a grain of salt, but this isn't the first time She-Hulk's future in the MCU has been called into question by insiders or scoopers. A number of reports have already indicated that the Jade Giantess's role could be limited going forward due to Marvel Studios' recent shift towards a less-is-more strategy, which has reportedly resulted in some project cancellations.

Tatiana Maslany portrayed Jennifer Walters in She-Hulk: Attorney At Law, which ran for nine episodes on Disney Plus in the summer of 2022. There has yet to be any official word as to whether a second season was ever in development, but that also wasn't abnormal for the Marvel shows as the vast majority of them have operated like miniseries, with the potential for renewal down the line.

However, earlier this year, reports surfaced that claimed She-Hulk had been quietly cancelled as Marvel changed its release strategy. Amidst a number of underperformers at the box office, it was revealed that Marvel and Disney were taking a new approach, which has reportedly resulted in the cancellation of a number of in-development projects, including Ant-Man, Captain Marvel, and Eternals sequels. She-Hulk is rumored to be among the projects that got cancelled.

Star Tatiana Maslany also commented that she thought She-Hulk season 2 was unlikely, adding that she thinks the show blew its budget and "Disney was like: 'no thanks!'". Though that also isn't official confirmation, it doesn't sound too promising, especially when paired with the multitude of rumors the show's apparent cancellation.

Have we seen the last of She-Hulk in the MCU?

The sad thing is that She-Hulk actually could have returned for multiple seasons given that it's one of the Marvel shows that worked with the TV format the most. However, when you have a CGI Hulk in a sitcom, chances are that the show cost a lot more than it should have. And if it wasn't as successful as Marvel was hoping, that would unfortunately make it an easy ax.

What's interesting about this new report is that it appears to contradict the original reports about She-Hulk's future in the franchise. Though the show isn't expected to come back, Tatiana Maslany was expected to reprise her role as the Jade Giantess in the upcoming Avengers movies, with some expecting her to play a major role in the first one. But if this new rumor pans out, that may no longer be the case.

The truth is that She-Hulk: Attorney At Law didn't get enough love. Like WandaVision and Agatha All Along, it made the most of the fact that it was a TV series and it should have returned for more episodes. If it wasn't as successful as Marvel was hoping for, it makes sense that the studio pivoted its plans for the character's return, but we just hope that this means she will turn up in the movies instead. Because it would be a real shame if the character didn't play any kind of role going forward.

There is still a place for She-Hulk in the MCU, even if it's not on TV anymore.
