Marvel Studios is known for producing superhero sensations. The Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise, which kicked off with Iron Man in 2008, has delivered some of the biggest and best superhero movies the genre has ever seen, single-handedly reinventing that genre as it went along. Not only did it produce successful movies, it enhanced the legacies of characters like Iron Man and Captain America, introducing them to more mainstream audiences and making them household names among non comic book readers.
Since the Multiverse Saga began, the MCU has been looking to do the same with a new generation of heroes (along with some of the overlooked supporting characters from the previous one). For the most part, it has been successful, with wins like Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings and Agatha All Along, but some projects have struggled more than the franchise is known for struggling.
Now, one of the stars of the Multiverse Saga has revealed that they don't know if they will return.
Teyonah Parris doesn't know if she will be back in the MCU
Teyonah Parris, who portrays Monica Rambeau, a.k.a. Photon, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe doesn't know if her character will return to the franchise anytime soon. Appearing on a recent episode of Watch What Happens Live!, she responded to a fan question about whether we might see the character return soon with: "I have no clue... I'm sorry. I don't, I don't know."
Parris made her MCU debut in 2021's Emmy-winning WandaVision when Monica turned up as a resident of Westview named Geraldine. The character had accidentally been pulled into the Scarlet Witch's magical Hex, but upon re-entering it, she developed super-powers. She then brought those powers to The Marvels, where she teamed with Captain Marvel and Ms. Marvel to stop the nefarious Dar-Benn.
The 2023 movie unfortunately failed at the box office, becoming one in a recent string of Marvel movies to not break even during its theatrical run. The film suffered much more than its fellow underperformers due to the strikes preventing the cast from doing any kind of promotion for the movie. But the film's box office failure unfortunately became a much bigger story, with reports of the studio attempting to rework parts of the franchise in a bid to reinvigorate excitement in it.
Those attempts to rework it have reportedly seen the cancellation of a third Captain Marvel movie, but they were also responsible for the apparent cancellation of a series that was set to focus on Parris' Monica Rambeau. While fans weren't aware that a Photon series was ever in development, insider Daniel Richtman reported that it was scrapped after the reception to The Marvels. And if that's the case, it wouldn't be the only series potentially axed in recent months as reports also claim that Disney Plus series She-Hulk: Attorney At Law won't return for a second season.
Even without the series, it's likely that Rambeau will be back in some capacity. After all, the last time that the character appeared in The Marvels, she was trapped in a parallel dimension and crossed paths with that Earth's X-Men, including Beast and Binary - a variant of her mother, Maria Rambeau. Carol Danvers and Kamala Khan promised to find a way to get her back, and given that the Multiverse Saga is literally about travelling to other worlds, something tells us that she will appear again at some point.
Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars are set to bring the Multiverse Saga to a conclusion and, with Monica's multiversal arc being one of the most significant threads that have yet to be tied up, we should expect to see Teyonah Parris appear in at least one of those movies. It would be an injustice to her and her character if Marvel didn't give her the chance to bring Monica back to Earth-616.
