In the previous story arc of Chip Zdarsky’s Captain America, Steve Rogers and Nick Fury’s S.H.I.E.L.D. were attempting to find and take one of Dr. Doom’s weapons. The problem is that Red Hulk (Thaddeus Ross) and his team of Hulks had the same mission. On top of that, Latveria was fighting back against their newest tyrant, Marius Wolf, aka Salvation.

It wasn’t surprising that nothing was going right for Steve Rogers. That’s usually the case until the end, when he fights back with everything he has left. Sadly, even after everything was said and done and Latveria defeated Salvation, there was still Red Hulk to deal with, who was destroying Latveria without any concern for civilian casualties.

As the issue came to a close, Captain America was injured and could barely breathe. However, he refused to let anyone get hurt. That leads to him being crushed while protecting a child from a crashing castle. It’s revealed at the end of the issue that Steve Rogers was in Hell. But issue No. 12 of Captain America shows that his soul is in the afterlife but still clinging to life.

When Cap arrives in Hell, he’s greeted by Victor von Doom and his partner, Veratok. Doom tells Rogers that he’s still alive, but his body is struggling to breathe on Earth. Rather than listen to Victor (with good reason), Rogers attacks him and searches for a way out. Sadly, Steve learns that there is no escape.

On his way, Cap saves someone named Terry from their eternal torment. That’s when Doom and Veratok return to explain that what Steve Rogers just did is what they’re attempting to accomplish. Doom says that everyone in Hell deserves a chance at redemption instead of pain and suffering forever. And with that, the three, along with the newly rescued Terry, set off to the Grey Valley to recruit more souls for the rebellion in Hell.

If you’re a fan of Marvel Comics, then you know within all of this talk of Hell, one name has been missing, and that’s the King of Hell himself, Mephisto. He'd been looking for Doom but was unable to find him until Steve Rogers’ bright soul appeared. Now that he knows where he is, Mephisto recruits one of the demons named Frenzah to go after him. But, since this is no ordinary search and capture, another soul in Hell is joining Frenzah, and it’s one of the worst people in history, Johann Schmidt, aka, Red Skull.

Apparently, Red Skull and Captain America are destined to fight in life and in death. And while certain people may roll their eyes at another Steve Rogers and Johann Schmidt battle, Hell is the perfect place for it to happen. Plus, Doom and Rogers’ idea of everyone deserving redemption will be put to the test when confronted with one of the most hateful Nazis in comic books.
