Caution: This article contains SPOILERS for The Boys series finale

As many expected, The Boys went out in a bloody way, with several major characters biting the dust. The biggest was Homelander as the murderous supe finally met his end after being stripped of his powers, beaten down by Billy Butcher, and ending up with a crowbar through the head. Butcher himself was killed by Hughie before he could release a supe-killing virus.

Before all that, there was the long-overdue and much-awaited death of The Deep. The aquatic “hero” had previously been through a wild ordeal. After the Deep killed a director who was going to give Black Noir a prime role, Noir hit back by arranging for a massive oil spill to kill millions of fish. For once, the Deep was affected by something other than himself, mourning those creatures.

The Deep killed Noir only to discover the ocean world blamed him for the oil spill. A shark (voiced by Samuel L. Jackson) warned the Deep that if he stepped one foot into any body of water, he was a dead man.

That came up again in the finale as the Deep faced Starlight (Erin Moriarty), with the two battling at a beach. She gave him a chance to walk away and atone, but the Deep refused. Annie then blasted him into the water, and the Deep was subsequently feasted upon by the various fish life there.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, actor Chace Crawford shared his thoughts on how he was frankly amazed he made it all the way to the finale and how deserved the Deep’s end was.

“It's very much deserved. I'm shocked I made it to the last episode, to be honest. I'm shocked The Deep made it... I mean, he's irredeemable, right? Before the season started, [Eric] Kripke sat us down, or at least he sat me down and was like, 'Hey, this is your arc.' But he was like, 'You might make it to the end of 7, top of 8.' I'm like, 'Please, just let me make it to the end.'"

Crawford's words echo those of others in that the Deep was never going to get any redemption. The man’s actions spanned from assaulting Annie and other women to murdering civilians to doing anything Homelander wanted. It was always about the fame and money and sucking up to anyone to get what he wanted. He cared for nothing but himself and Crawford felt his ending was perfect for him.

"It's f***ing hilarious. The idea that he gets banned from the ocean, the only place that he can go and have a social life with the marine life... and to be murdered by them was epic."

Thus, even Crawford has no issue at all with the way the Deep met his end and summing up how this was one character from The Boys who deserved the nastiest death possible.

While the series finale of The Boys received a mixed response from fans of the show, it was always clear that there were going to be some major characters that died in that final episode. The show featured truly abhorrent characters claiming to be superheroes, and with The Boys themselves taking the fight to them right to the very end, it was always going to catch up to them.

The Deep's ending is just one of the many that we saw throughout the course of the series, and one of the most significant in the final ever episode of the Prime Video show.

All five seasons of The Boys are now streaming on Prime Video.
