From the moment The Penguin season 1 came to an end, fans have been eagerly waiting for confirmation from HBO on whether the breakout series could return for a second season. And we can’t fault fans for their eagerness to see another season of the series.
Without giving too much away for those who somehow still have not watched the series, let’s just say that season 1 went out with quite a bang. The first season was one of the best superhero genre programs to ever grace the screen and The Penguin has become a rare series within the space to receive both critical and fan acclaim, becoming one of the most celebrated comic book series in TV history.
The show and its talented cast have wracked up a growing list of accolades since the season ended including the man behind Oswald 'Oz' Cobb: Colin Farrell. Farrell delivered a masterful performance as the title character which has deservingly earned him a myriad of awards this awards season including the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Male Actor In A Limited Series.
Farrell’s win at the 31st Annual SAG Awards marked the latest in a string of wins for the actor and it seems he’s in no way ready to walk away from the character just yet.

Colin Farrell shares new update on The Penguin season 2 discussions
After accepting his Screen Actors Guild Award for his performance in The Penguin, Farrell spoke with members of the press backstage and the conversation quickly shifted to discussions for the potential to return as Oz in a second season of The Penguin. While Farrell played it coy, he made it clear there is one key factor that needs to happen for a second season to work.
“I'd agree with what Matt Reeves, Dylan Clark, and Lauren LaFran have said, if they came up with an idea for a second season that was really strong, and we all felt compelled to continue to explore the character of Oz in that way, then for sure. It all has to tie in though. Matt Reeves is the goat in this world of Gotham right now, you know. He's the boss and he established this new vision of Gotham with The Batman film. So obviously The Penguin show picks up a week after the end of The Batman, then I think The Penguin might feature in the second Batman film, and then it has to work in a parallel way. So we'll see what Matt Reeves and the rest of them can come up with. But yeah, I'd be open to it for sure,” Farrell revealed.
The update definitely suggests conversations are ongoing about the future of the character within the DC Universe being built and it seems everyone involved with The Penguin is open to the idea of continuing the story. However, it’s becoming increasingly clear that a lot of things have to align for a second season to work… and it could be some time before we could see a second season.
Farrell’s latest comments suggest that a second season would not happen until after The Batman Part 2 releases. At this time, the plan is for The Batman Part 2 to be released sometime in 2027 which means the earliest we’d likely see a second season of The Penguin would be sometime later that same year or more likely a bit more removed perhaps in 2028 or later. That’s not to say there isn’t a slim chance we could see a second season arrive before The Batman Part 2, it’s just looking highly unlikely at this point.
Still, given the success the show has enjoyed, we have to imagine HBO will do everything it can to find a way to continue the story and continue to explore ways for a second season.
