Season 2, episode 7 of Daredevil: Born Again (titled “The Hateful Darkness”) didn’t start with the intensity I expected. Initially, it felt underwhelming. Not because things were boring. It was because penultimate episodes are normally exciting from the start of the episode until the cliffhanger at the end (more on that later). With all of that being said, as I’m writing this article, I realized that I misjudged this episode, and the reflection started during the court scene.
WARNING! SPOILERS FOR DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN, SEASON 2, EPISODE 7
If you aren’t a fan of the Man Without Fear in Marvel Comics, it’s easy to forget that Matt Murdock is a lawyer. Mostly because he’s spent most of his time in his superhero suit instead of a three-piece one. That’s why his showing up for Karen Page as Matt Murdock, the lawyer, was a big deal. Not only was this good for Karen, but it threw Wilson and the rest of his Anti-Vigilante Task Force goons off their game and made them act irrationally. It was all a perfect setup that led to an incredible final ten minutes.
Devil of an ending
Bullseye showing up and doing something heroic without a ton of carnage was not on my bingo card. Thankfully, this didn't ruin his character. The scene had all of the smoothness that fans have come to expect from Poindexter. Nevertheless, no one could have foreseen him having anything resembling redemption. However, this probably won't stick. The creative team is probably giving viewers a false sense of security.
The meeting between Karen and Heather Glenn was the moment when you realized that Dr. Glenn is beyond redemption. Sure, she treated Karen like Jacques Duquesne, but this was different. Dr. Glenn seemed uncaring throughout the beginning of their conversation. Sadly, that wasn't the worst of things.
Towards the end of the scene, Dr. Glenn gets personal with Karen instead of keeping things professional. Karen infuriates Heather to the point that she attacks the handcuffed Karen Page. The best part is that Karen took the attacks and laughed. This certainly angered Heather Glenn more than she let on. Look for this to be one of the moments that lead to her becoming the new Muse.
Lastly, we come to one of the turning points for Buck and Daniel. Initially, it looked like Daniel was all in on being the next Wilson Fisk. He loved Mayor Fisk, tried to emulate some of the moves he made, and seemed to be all in on most of the things that were happening. It wasn’t until he was forced to bring B.B. Urich to Buck so he could murder her that he was forced to make a life-changing decision.
Buck beats Daniel within an inch of his life, but you can tell it’s not something he wants to do. Then, Buck points a gun at Daniel and gives him one last chance to say where B.B. is. Daniel redeems himself with two sentences. “What is followin' his orders gonna do for you? How long 'till you're on the floor with a gun pointed at your head?” Despite doing the deed, you can tell that Buck regrets what he just did. Look for him to start questioning Fisk going forward.
The Daredevil: Born Again season finale is next! Tuesday on Disney+ at 9 pm EST. Stay tuned to Bam Smack Pow and the social media sites, Bluesky, Instagram, and Twitter to find out more about the ending.
