Daredevil: Born Again season 2 ended with Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) taking down Mayor Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio), but it came at a cost. To defuse Fisk’s leverage over him, Matt revealed his identity as Daredevil to the world. That led to him being arrested for breaking New York City’s anti-vigilante laws.
Obviously, the show won’t have its main hero stuck in jail for an entire season, so somehow Matt will be freed and back on the streets as Daredevil. However, with new onset videos and images, it’s going to be with a brand-new look.
The images (which, per Comic Book Movie, have passed the “AI tests” and are legitimate) show Daredevil wearing a new costume that is mostly red but also a mix of grey with the “DD” logo in bright red on the chest. The mask looks redesigned, more akin to the comic book version, and has more additions on the wrists and belt.
The look may be familiar to long-time Daredevil fans. In 1993, to mark the character’s 30th anniversary, a controversial storyline had Matt faking his death after his identity was exposed and taking to wearing an armored suit much like this one. He would use it for a couple of years in darker storylines. Eventually, Matt was able to “return” to life and resume the classic red suit.
The era is an example of the “grim and gritty” tone of the 1990s and is not remembered too fondly. Yet it would fit for Matt to take on a new costume with a new attitude after his time in prison. The outfit looks stronger to match Matt’s new outlook, fighting crime in a darker New York City. It also just looks really cool, the rare case of a comic book costume that's better on screen than on the page.
It’s interesting that the suit seems brighter red, as a fan complaint about Daredevil has been the costume being a more muted shade of crimson. It sounds like the first half of the season will concentrate on Matt in jail, so we won’t see this new costume until the latter half of the season. It’s logical it’s a new design Matt was working on during his time away.
Going for such a unique look is an unexpected move for the show, but it’s still great to see Daredevil embrace the comic book aesthetic so well, and this throwback costume could end up being a hit with fans.
