The fifth episode of Daredevil: Born Again might not be the most over-the-top or flashy episode of the season, but it was one of the most fun episodes of the season – one which allowed us to see Matt using his abilities to save the day in an unexpected way that didn’t require him to suit up as Daredevil. It also didn’t hurt that the episode featured a fun and unexpected cameo as well a major update on a cancelled Marvel movie rumored to have since been turned into a series.

Before diving into the spoilers, let this serve as a warning that spoilers are coming for the fifth episode of Daredevil: Born Again.

Early in the episode, Matt heads out to the bank in hopes of securing a loan for his firm, which is struggling a bit lately thanks to Matt’s bleeding heart and desire to take on cases involving clients unable to pay for his legal fees. Much to our surprise, the bank employee Matt ends up meeting with is none other than Yusuf Khan, father of Ms. Marvel.

Daredevil: Born Again gives fans a subtle update on Young Avengers

As Yusuf and Matt make small talk, Yusuf talks about living in Jersey City and proudly shows off his Ms. Marvel custom Funko Pop! Figure. In speaking with Matt, Yusuf casually mentions that his daughter is currently out of town visiting friends in California before the conversation moves along quickly, and the pair end up thrust into the center of a bank heist. The reference was so small that some might not have even paid attention to it, but that quick one-off line is the closest thing we’ve gotten to an update about the Young Avengers since Ms. Marvel went to recruit Kate Bishop for her team at the end of The Marvels.

While Yusuf did not specify who these friends Kamala was out of town visiting were, it seems like a well-designed line intended to allude to the fact that Kamala is currently working to build her Young Avengers team. This makes complete sense given that Kamala is being used as a driving force to assemble the team of Young Avengers, whose journey is expected to now continue on within the MCU via a Disney+ series with the planned Young Avengers movie reportedly cancelled.

Marvel has been gradually putting the pieces into place for the Young Avengers to come together in the MCU, introducing several key members of the franchise within their own various projects. Thus far, we’ve met Kate Bishop, Ms. Marvel, Cassie Lang, America Chavez, and Wiccan, with Marvel expected to introduce Hulkling, Speed, and Viv within upcoming projects to round out the roster of Young Avengers.

The Marvels marked the biggest move forward for these heroes coming together as Ms. Marvel set out to begin assembling the team, starting with Kate Bishop, and the reports suggested the plan was for them to assemble for a film. Instead, it seems Marvel is looking to bring the characters together via a Disney+ original series that won’t even use the Young Avengers name.

Rather than bringing the characters together for a show titled Young Avengers, Marvel is rumored to be instead bringing them together in a show titled Championsa move insiders report is due to the studio recognizing that many members of the Young Avengers ensemble will be in their 20s and possibly 30s by the time the show finally launches.

Regardless of what brings the Young Avengers together, it’s going to be exciting to see them come together, and we appreciate Daredevil: Born Again’s fun reference to Kamala being out of town visiting friends. We can only hope that more upcoming Marvel projects will bring more updates on the Young Avengers, be it via one-off mentions to remind us the team is being assembled or more direct moments such as Kamala and Kate Bishop’s scene in The Marvels.
