Matt Hagen is a superstar in the DC Universe, and he might become one in the real world too, according to early Clayface projections.

Matt Hagen was born to be in the spotlight. The up-and-coming Hollywood superstar is about to have the time of his life in the DC Universe, starring in no shortage of projects, signing multiple autographs, and becoming the (blank) face of many box-office hits. Better yet, his stardom may be about to skyrocket in the real world too.

The third-ever DCU film, Clayface, may be the franchise's most intriguing project yet. Instead of featuring an A-list hero the whole world recognizes, this R-rated body-horror film will tell the story of a promising actor whose whole career was ruined in a second. After a tragic accident left his face scarred, Matt Hagen will attempt to recover what he lost by any means. Unfortunately, an experimental procedure will only make things worse by turning him into a horrific monster that's bound to terrorize the citizens of Gotham for years to come (and hopefully fight against Batman one day).

While Clayface is not a "conventional" superhero project, it may be exactly what the DCU needs right now. After all, the movie is looking to become a success by recouping its initial budget during the opening weekend alone, if early projections are anything to go by.

Clayface will likely recoup its original budget on its opening weekend

According to a projection by Boxoffice Pro, Clayface is tracking to have a domestic opening weekend of $23 to $33 million against a reported $40 million budget. On the higher end of things, U.S. showings alone would be nearly enough for the DCU project to recoup its original budget. But even in the worst-case scenario, its international gross should push it over the $40 million mark.

There are a few factors to take into consideration. For starters, a film's break-even point usually stands at around two times its budget to account for promotional and marketing expenses as well. That means Clayface should gross more than $80 million to become profitable. Furthermore, early reviews can heavily impact the gross of superhero films starring B-list characters. As such, the projection numbers are likely to fluctuate once the first reactions come in.

On paper, a $33 million domestic opening may not seem like much. However, not only is this amount nearly enough to recoup the initial investment, but it would nearly match Supergirl's $37.1 million domestic opening. While Kara Zor-El's theatrical adventure flopped by grossing $126 million worldwide, a similar figure would be more than enough to make Clayface a commercial success.

Clayface could also benefit from the horror wave that has been taking over 2026. Films like Obsession, Backrooms, and Resident Evil have all become huge hits at the box office, and the DCU's upcoming project could keep the streak going. Furthermore, Clayface's release means it can make the most of the Halloween window, which could position it as a must-watch for horror fans if the initial reception is stellar.

Clayface hasn't had much of a marketing push yet, which is why word-of-mouth marketing will be instrumental to its success. While its review embargo date hasn't been unveiled just yet, it isn't far-fetched to assume the first reactions could start rolling in the week of October 12 to 18, just ahead of the film's release. That means we aren't far from discovering whether the DCU has a potential hit in the making or yet another underwhelming release in its early days.

Clayface will be released on Oct. 23, 2026.
