Throughout this series of Tom King’s Wonder Woman, there was a story of a battle that would rock the world. It was called the Wonder War, and the tale started with a villain who controlled America behind the scenes, named the Sovereign (whose real name is Henry Charles).
After a bar fight with Emelie breaks out, the patriarchy makes it illegal for Amazons to live in America. Diana Prince (Wonder Woman) fought back against this law, leading to a bunch of near-death fights and some amazing team-ups. The most interesting part of this story is that it was told from the perspective of the Sovereign in the future after something called "The Wonder War" ended. During this war, the members of the Justice League were either captured or killed thanks to the leadership of the Matriarch.
Once again, Diana wasn’t going to let this stand. Further into it, Diana comes up with a plan to fix everything. It involved an adult Superman (Jon Kent) and Damian Wayne (Batman) and Wonder Woman’s daughter, Trinity. Unfortunately, it required Jon and Damian to die so they could get the God Killer Sword (Wonder Woman No. 31).
In the next issue, Diana leaves her hideout to find Steve Trevor (for reasons that haven’t been revealed), who’s in the Matriarch’s dungeon. With him is the Man of Steel, Superman, who’s older, weak, and pale thanks to being without the sun’s light for years. Kal-El tells Diana and Trinity where Steve is, which later infuriates Matriarch when she finds out that Steve left with Trinity and Diana.
After learning that Steve Trevor escaped, Matriarch tortures Superman, hoping that he’d tell her what Diana’s plan was. Of course, Kal-El doesn’t, but he also dies in the process. Before he dies, Superman apologizes, saying, “I’m sorry for what’s coming for you.” It was unclear what that meant, but then we get to the end of the story and see the Fates.
What's going on?
Throughout this series, I’ve wondered if this was a story in an alternate reality. There was no way there was a future where Matriarch kills most of the Justice League and Wonder Woman’s villains and rules the world, at least not in the main timeline. Then, I started looking back and understanding the clues Tom King dropped.
First, Matriarch goes to Mongul, who whispers something to her. It was the first time that readers saw her worried. However, she smiles right after that. It’s as if she learned a terrible secret and then discovered a way to avoid it. And then there’s the story that’s being told that we later learn is being told by the fates.
Throughout The Wonder War, they continuously say ominous things about the future and how there’s a threat to time. Well, if I had to guess, Wonder Woman is attempting to pull a move from God of War 2 when Kratos decides to change his destiny by killing the Sisters of Fate.
The Sisters of Fate weave the threads of time and know everything that has happened, is currently occurring, and what will transpire. It’s why they knew Diana was coming and that she was looking to change the past to avoid a terrible future. That's what Superman meant when he apologized. He knew that Diana was going to end Matriarch's existence by altering the past.
Sadly, we’ll have to wait and see if Wonder Woman can defeat the Matriarch and fix this timeline. Also, altering the timeline could mean that Trinity would never have been born.
