DC legend sacrifices themselves to give the universe a fighting chance

Death is nothing new to a Green Lantern, but that doesn’t make a certain character’s sacrifice any less heroic.

Jeremy Adams' Green Lantern run has been superb, and this is coming from someone who’s not a huge fan of space battles or the Green  Lanterns. Every issue of the DC Comics story shows the importance of the Corps by reminding readers that the slightest mistake can lead to the destruction of the universe.

For example, at one point, all emotions were removed from the world. Without them, none of the Lanterns across the color spectrum could use their Power Rings. Thankfully, some of their members are robots or cyborgs. It allowed them to function and help get things back in order.

With some of their powers restored, the personification of the Emotional Spectrum helped the heroes send the Sun-Eaters back to their camp. Sadly, the fight was far from over. After regrouping, the villains were furiously on their way to Oa. None of the Lanterns, like Hal Jordan, Sinestro, or Kyle Rayner, had a plan to stop them. Thankfully, someone did, and his name was John Stewart.

The first step in John Stewart’s plan was making sure everyone was used to the best of their ability. A smart move from a brilliant leader. The next was something he wasn’t sure would work. He went to the imprisoned villains and asked them for their help. He said they could die in their cells or fight for the heroes. It took a second, but they knew that fighting was in their best interest.

There was still one problem. They had the numbers, but no power to stop the Sun-Eaters. The Power Ring Batteries needed a charge, but no one could light them up. That’s when John Stewart mentioned the Source came to him, called him the Emerald Knight, and gave him an “insurmountable amount of energy.” With that in mind, John goes into the middle of the group of Power Ring Batteries, glows bright as a star, and fully charges them. Unfortunately, it destroyed John in the process.

The good news

John Stewart knew this was the end. You could tell after he told the construct of his sister, Ellie, that she hoped that she would live on after what he was about to do. Thankfully, she did. But her survival isn't the only good news.

As the Power Rings were going to the worthy recipients, a Green Willpower Ring flew to Ellie. This leads this writer to believe that John is living on through that ring. Maybe, because of what John did, there will be a piece of him throughout the Emotional Spectrum. It would be a nice way for him to continue since it's similar to how he brought back his sister.
