When it comes to all-time classic comics, few stories are as revered and homaged as The Dark Knight Returns. The team of Frank Miller, Klaus Janson, and Lynn Varley delivered a truly unforgettable Batman story, and now DC is looking to give one of its iconic Green Lanterns that same treatment.
During the Vertigo and Black Label panel at New York Comic Con, DC revealed a first look at a new Black Label series titled Green Lantern: The Dying of the Light (via @thechrisanton). The new miniseries will run five issues and will feature the all-star creative team of Jason Aaron (Absolute Superman) and Tirso (Dark Knights of Steel: Allwinter). The series will launch sometime in 2027, and it is described as a Dark Knight Returns-style story.
DC showed off several pieces of artwork during the panel, including a scene of Hal being brought down by other Lanterns and arrested. While it takes a group of Lanterns to keep him restrained, he is eventually brought down, and his ring is removed and locked up.
Some additional details and artwork were provided by @Crowversies, who revealed that the story then picks up after Jordan has been in prison for 20 years. We get another page of artwork that shows a much older and grey-haired Jordan being brought out of his cell to meet what is presumably the Guardians of this world.
Jordan has had several iconic stories at this point, and he's even had a full fall-from-grace and rebirth story arc that's all in continuity. While some of those stories deal with mature and darker themes, Green Lantern: The Dying of the Light looks to be taking some of those elements even further. That's something DC's Black Label imprint is perfectly suited for, and this type of story has the potential to resonate even more in a post-Lanterns world.
Another reason to get excited for this series is the incredible world-building that Aaron has done in books like Absolute Superman and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Aaron stayed true to the core elements of those franchises while reimagining their worlds and mythologies at the same time, and both were well received. Now he gets to do the same with Green Lantern, and we could very well be in for something really special when it finally releases.
Green Lantern: The Dying of the Light is slated to hit comic stores in 2027.
