The start of a new relationship

The episode starts with a flashback to 2016, after the confrontation that completely decimated Rushville, Nebraska. For the first time ever, we see the moment Kerry meets with Hal after the dust has settled. Hal's first instinct was to ask how many people died, and while Kerry doesn't know an exact number just yet, she replies with yet another question: "Was it worth it?"

Hal acknowledges that Kerry tried to convince him to leave town, yet he declined. Now, whatever punishment comes next, it will be on him. The show then fast-forwards to 2026, on the very same day that Hal is evicted from prison. Kerry is outside the facility, waiting for him with a box of beers. Hal seems surprised to see her there, but the two didn't miss a beat since they last saw each other.

A month later, the two go out for dinner, but unfortunately for Hal, everyone at the restaurant is giving him a weird look. After all, he was indirectly responsible for killing the Manhunter—the very same being who ensured no one in town got sick or seriously hurt. Not only that, but it was due to Hal's intervention that war befell the town. Kerry stands in the middle of the restaurant and gives a heartfelt speech, claiming that even if Hal doesn't deserve "grace," he deserves peace, and everyone who dares threaten that peace will have to answer to her.

Time goes by, and things finally start to turn around for Hal. Kerry asks him to go to Noah's game publicly, and he gets a place in Rushville, Nebraska. Unfortunately, peace doesn't last long, as one day a car suddenly parks outside Hal's new place and throws two Molotov cocktails inside. Despite Hal's best attempt to leave the place, he's unable to escape the flames and passes out in the middle of the burning house. But out of the blue, he wakes up in a laboratory with a mark on his arm (similar to the one John had after the Manhunter cured his burnt body).

Noah's true identity is revealed

Hal isn't alone in the laboratory, as there's another guest with him: Noah Macon, Kerry's son. Noah then tells Hal: "Your skin's new. I wish there was a way to save you without letting you know what I am. You can't tell my mom I healed you. She doesn't realize I know." After such a suspicious monologue, Hal asks Noah what he really is.

We then cut back to John Stewart, who is in space right in front of Sinestro after the events of episode 7. Sinestro claims Hal Jordan told him that Noah was a Manhunter in disguise. Furthermore, the villain reveals that Noah broke him out of prison.

John asks why there was a portal that led from Rushville, Nebraska, straight to a decimated planet that has fear gas all over it. Sinestro claims the portal was built by Zoe Macon—the original Manhunter and grandmother of Noah—so she could visit the very same place she once destroyed. These visits may be the result of "weakness and guilt," according to Sinestro.

John says there is something that doesn't quite make sense: Why would Noah go out of his way to bring Hal Jordan back to life after the fire, only to kill him? Sinestro doesn't want to answer any more questions and demands to talk to the Halogram. Naturally, John disagrees and instead comes up with a way to make the villain talk. The aspirant to Green Lantern ties Sinestro to a metal chair and submerges him in the waters infested with fear toxin.

Eventually, Sinestro breaks and tells the truth: he forged Noah a lantern after being broken out of prison. However, there's one peculiarity about the lanterns forged by Sinestro: they use fear to charge the rings. Without any power left in his Green Lantern ring, John seriously considers using one of them. However, Hal's hologram appears right in time to stop him. Not only that, but Hal's copy also asks Sinestro what his real-life counterpart was doing on the planet before dying.

Hal's life could still be saved

Sinestro reveals that Hal followed Noah after being rescued by him. Earth's original Green Lantern discovered the portal to the decimated planet and eventually came to the realization that the portal needed to be locked away. On the planet, Hal met with Sinestro, who tried to convince him to kill Noah instead of simply hiding away his tools.

Before the conversation goes any further, Sinestro says that he knows a way to bring the real Hal Jordan back to life—the villain simply needs the hero's ring. John then puts all the pieces together and reveals Noah's true plan. Sinestro has been the only being across the cosmos to kill a Guardian, so Noah broke him out of prison and made him forge a Lantern because he wants revenge. After all, it was because of the Guardians that his grandmother, Zoe, was hunted and killed in the first place.

Sinestro tries to convince John to charge the ring using the Fear Lantern, but the former United States Marine Corps sniper simply leaves along with the Halogram. The two then take the canoe back to the portal, and during the trip, Hal says something shocking: "I take it back. You should charge the ring. There's only about seven minutes of power left." Hal claims that he's simply trying to protect John, and that if he doesn't charge the ring, he'll die. After all, Noah will likely come looking for him.

John doesn't make any hasty decisions and claims that he still has time to figure out what to do next. After all, Noah has a football game, and he will likely be thinking about that. Unfortunately, things don't go according to plan. John comes out of the portal and back to Earth, only to find Noah has been waiting there this whole time. Noah beats John and takes the Green Lantern ring off his hand.

Hero and villain meet

Noah orders John to drive, although the audience doesn't initially learn where the two are going. Inside the car, Noah asks why he killed his grandmother, to which John replies: "Because she was a Manhunter." Visibly angry, Noah replies: "So am I. You think that's a good enough reason to murder someone?"

John confesses to Noah that he had feelings for Zoe, and that she also saved his life. However, he claims that there was a very specific reason why the Manhunter saved him: so he could kill her in return. Noah is visibly confused about the situation; why would Zoe save John with the sole purpose of hoping that he would kill her in return? Well, John replies with a simple answer: "Because if she was gone, then nobody would come here to look for you."

Despite John's attempt, Noah doesn't believe his story. Instead, the Manhunter asks him to keep driving to the football field. In the parking lot, Noah reveals that he wasn't the one who burned Hal's house. He simply saw the smoke and ran in to help Hal. "I trusted him with what I was. All he had to do was let it be," said Noah. But instead, Hal followed him and discovered the portal. Since Noah couldn't risk Hal telling Kerry what he was doing, he simply killed Hal.

After weeks of speculation, we finally have an answer. Noah was the one who shot Hal point-blank in the head. Or did he?

John is asked an impossible favor

However, Noah isn't completely evil. He was programmed to destroy worlds and impart his own ruthless version of "justice." However, he's trying to fight his programming and reveals there's a part of him that simply wants to live a normal life, play football, meet someone, and have a family. Unfortunately, the other part of him wants power. He wants to go into politics, control the Pentagon, and have an arsenal of weapons under his command. And if anyone tried to stop him, he'd have a ring and a lantern to fight back.

Noah takes off Hal's Green Lantern ring and then turns to John and asks him an unthinkable favor: to kill him. "You killed my grandma out of mercy. I'm asking you to do the same for me," says Noah. He wants to play his last ever football game for his teammates, and then he can die in peace.

John tries to talk to the Halogram to decide what to do, but it seems the ring's charge has finally run out. Now, he's all on his own.

After a few minutes, John came out of the car and went to talk to Kerry, who was watching his son play the game. Kerry asked why John had dumped her before going to Hal's security vault, and John confessed that it was because he wasn't sure whether he could trust her.

John reveals he knows Noah is a Manhunter and tells Kerry that she must have been scared of anyone finding out the truth about his son. Kerry reveals that she wasn't scared, but rather terrified. In that moment, we finally get to see how Hal Jordan died.
