It's safe to say that DC's Lanterns has been one of the big success stories of 2026. The HBO and HBO Max series revolves around classic DC Comics characters Hal Jordan and John Stewart as they delve into the history of the Green Lantern mantle, but there are some genuinely unexpected surprises in there due to its grittier nature.
The series has received critical acclaim, set viewership records, and gave James Gunn and Peter Safran's DC Universe a much-needed win after the box office failure of Supergirl this summer. And its weekly mystery has ensured that people have kept tuning in to find out the truth behind the story's central murder investigation and the secrets behind Rushville, Nebraska.
That being said, there is something you need to know about next week's episode.
Lanterns episode 8 is the season 1 finale
Lanterns episode 8 premieres on HBO and HBO Max on Sunday, October 4, at 9:00 p.m. ET, 6:00 p.m. PT, 8:00 p.m. CT, and 7:00 p.m. MT. That much won't come as a surprise to you considering that it has been a staple of HBO Sundays throughout its run, but it might surprise you to learn that next week's episode is indeed the season finale. Yes, for the time being, that means that next week's episode is the final episode of Lanterns.
Of course, there are hopes that the show will be renewed for a second season. And after the response that it received, it would be a wise decision to pursue that potential season 2, because the audience interest is clearly there. And when you consider Green Lantern's lacklustre live-action history, that's a testament of how good Lanterns is.
As for what fans can expect in the upcoming season 1 finale, the most important thing is the resolution to the central mystery. The core story of Lanterns has revolved around the shocking murder of original Green Lantern Hal Jordan. The character has remained a massive, integral figure in the DC Universe series, but the series premiere flashed forward to the present day 2026 to reveal that he had been killed while staying in Rushville, Nebraska. And after showing us that that mystery started in 2016 with the whole Manhunter incident, the sixth episode took us back to the present day to show us Rushville's reaction to the Green Lantern's death.
And yet, the biggest question still remains: Who killed Hal Jordan? John Stewart looks to find that out in a finale that will include the truth about Rushville, what happened to Sinestro, and the assailant responsible for the biggest mystery in the DC Universe.
Needless to say, DC fans are ready to see how Lanterns season 1 all ends (and, just as importantly, if it will set up a highly-anticipated season 2!).
