DC hasn't been finding much success in the video game department recently, but all of that might change soon thanks to this new project.

Warner Bros. Games is unfortunately in a pretty complicated spot. Recently, it was revealed they canceled a Flash video game and indefinitely delayed Monolith's Wonder Woman after a big creative reboot. Besides, support for Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League recently ended as the title failed to meet expectations.

So how does Warner's video game division come out of such a grim spot? Well, by turning on the Bat-Signal and waiting for salvation, of course. That's right: It appears DC is gearing up for a big comeback at the hands of their most beloved character.

Rocksteady reportedly working on a Batman Beyond video game

According to industry insider Lunatic Ignus, Rocksteady Studios is working on a Batman Beyond game. This falls in line with a different report that claimed the developer would go back to basics and develop a single-player game starring the hero that put them on the map in the first place.

Unfortunately, the passing of the legendary Kevin Conroy meant the role of Bruce Wayne would have to be recast if the character made a comeback. So the idea of showcasing a new iteration of Batman who lives in a futuristic Gotham City is simply fantastic.

It's also being claimed that the upcoming Batman game will be the first of a new trilogy that will be exclusive to PlayStation 6 and PC — meaning Xbox wouldn't be in sight. While a release date for the new title wasn't revealed, we can assume it's still a long way off considering it would be developed for a next-generation console. PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida recently went on record to say the 2028 "feels right" for the release of the PS6. While far from being a confirmation, it does give us a better idea that we'd have to wait at the very least three years to see Rocksteady's new project (and even then, it will likely take more time considering the lengthy development times on AAA games nowadays).

If Rocksteady does go the futuristic route, then their upcoming game could still be set in the Arkhamverse where Bruce Wayne is alive after the events of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. However, the heroic billionaire might decide to retire and leave the door open for someone else to take on the mantle. Characters we've seen before such as Barbara Gordon and Ra's al Ghul could make a comeback. Furthermore, players could face the new Jokerz gang while the clown prince of crime is brought back from the grave as it happened in the Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker movie.

Exploring the deteriorated streets of Arkham and Gotham City was a highlight of the Batman: Arkham Saga. So it would be interesting how Rocksteady reimagines the city many years into the future. Hopefully, secondary missions make a return this time around after being notably absent in Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. Speaking of which, maybe another member of the Justice League could make an appearance after it was revealed all of them (except for Wonder Woman) survived Brainiac's invasion.

Unfortunately, it might take a while before Rocksteady releases an official statement about what they're working on next. The studio recently started searching for a new game director to take the reigns of their upcoming title. With that in mind, we're years away from getting an official reveal — let alone any look at gameplay. Hopefully, other superhero titles, such as Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, will be released in the meantime to make the wait feel shorter.
