The DCU has announced a TV show that no one was expecting

Now that Supergirl has soared into theaters, the DCU is already looking at what lies ahead, and they have found the answer in the form of an upcoming TV show.

Back in 2023, DC Studios co-CEO and co-chairman James Gunn released a video detailing what to expect from Gods and Monsters—the first chapter in the new and improved DC Universe. Titles like Superman, Creature Commandos, and Supergirl were officially unveiled, and all of them have already seen the light of day. Furthermore, Lanterns was also announced, and the upcoming HBO series is set to be released on Aug. 16, 2026. But beyond those four projects, things have not exactly gone according to plan.

The Authority has officially been shelved despite originally being part of this first chapter in the DCU. Additionally, projects like Waller, The Brave and the Bold, Paradise Lost, and Booster Gold are still in development, but there's no word yet on when they will be released. To make up for this void, DC will release Clayface, a body-horror film starring the infamous Batman villain, and Man of Tomorrow, a sequel to 2025's Superman. Now, the studio has added yet another unexpected project to the slate.

DC is working on a Mr. Terrific show

As revealed by The Hollywood Reporter, a Mr. Terrific TV series is in the works at DC. The Sandman writer and co-creator Allan Heinberg is currently writing the pilot, and Edi Gathegi is set to reprise his role as Michael Holt. The reveal comes as a big surprise, as Mr. Terrific wasn't part of the original Gods and Monsters slate announcement. As such, it would be interesting to learn whether this move was already planned years in advance or reactive, based on the audience's reception.

Mr. Terrific was one of the absolute highlights of Superman, with his beach fight scene absolutely stealing the spotlight. Chances are that the hero's standalone series was pitched afterward, and it wouldn't be far-fetched to assume that it could be fast-tracked after the commercial disappointment of Supergirl.

The Girl of Steel's latest adventure is tracking to lose $100 million for Warner Bros. due to its poor box-office reception. Unfortunately, this has put the whole future of the DCU into question, especially considering Supergirl was just the second-ever film in this new cinematic universe. To make things more complicated, Clayface is the next project on the slate, and there are many questions about how much money an R-rated movie starring a B-list villain can gross.

DC may be looking to focus on projects that would be more of a guaranteed success moving forward. Granted, Mr. Terrific isn't the most popular DC hero ever created, but his breakout role in Superman could be expanded upon in Man of Tomorrow. Besides, other projects such as The Brave and the Bold could also be fast-tracked, while it has been reported that DC is now prioritizing work on a Bane and Deathstroke film.

A lot has changed for the DCU since 2023, when the initial Gods and Monsters slate was announced. As such, now is the perfect time for the studio to level with fans and give us an update on what's coming next and when we can expect to see the projects that are being worked on. While San Diego Comic-Con 2026 is the perfect opportunity to do so, DC's participation remains a big question mark. Still, there's always a chance that the studio will surprise fans with a tease of what's to come in its cinematic universe.

Only time will tell what the future holds for the DCU. In the meantime, it seems we'll see more of Mr. Terrific for years to come, and we couldn't be any more excited.
