Deadpool, FML, Batman, and the must-read new comic books of the past week

DC Comics’ Absolute Green Lantern has its best issue to date, Marvel Comics’ Storm once again proves she’s one of the greats, FML No. 8 is a banger of an issue, and more must-read new comic books.

In the previous must-read new comic books article, Image Comics’ Exquisite Corpses, DC Comics’ Absolute Wonder Woman, and Marvel Comics’ Ultimates made appearances. While those two popping up wasn’t surprising, Superman: Father of Tomorrow wasn’t something I expected to love.

This week, there are representatives from various comic book companies and stories that everyone can love. As always, let’s start with my favorite issue of the week.

FML No. 8

  • Writer: Kelly Sue DeConnick
  • Artist: David López
  • Colors: Cris Peter

Charles M. Schulz said, "Absence makes the heart grow fonder," and that’s always how I feel when a new issue of FML comes out. And, like always, I wasn't disappointed. This issue was funny, intense, and kept your attention with perfect storytelling and art. It was especially good when Riley embraced his inner monster to save his sister, Lillith.

Speaking of Lilith, you have to love how she’s being portrayed. On one hand, she always seems fearless. On the flip side, writer Kelly Sue DeConnick reminds readers that she’s still a kid despite how brave she can be.

Batman No. 10

  • Writer: Matt Fraction
  • Artist: Jorge Jiménez
  • Colors: Tomeu Morey

There have been plenty of Batman stories when you look at the Bat Family and marvel at what they just accomplished. It normally comes after a time when something tragic has just happened. In this case, we have Batman No. 10 after Vandal Savage gets a big win...or so he thinks.

I couldn’t help but smile throughout this issue. Vandal Savage was talking as if he were the best thing ever because he defeated Batman. Little did he know, Barbara Gordon and Bruce Wayne had a plan and executed it right under Savage’s nose. Proving Barbara’s point that Batman always wins.

Storm: Earth’s Mightiest Mutant No. 5

  • Writer: Murewa Ayodele
  • Artist: Federica Mancin
  • Colors: Javier Tartaglia

Murewa Ayodele’s Storm has been a hit since he started the twelve-issue arc in 2024 after the Fall of X storyline. A couple of years later, he, along with an amazing creative team, kept things going with Storm: Earth’s Mightiest Mutant. The title was a bold claim until you read the series and understand that it’s accurate.

While readers didn’t get to see a final battle, they were given something better. There was a story of how Storm defined honor in a world that lacks it. It was profound and may help people try to be better in times when the world knocks us down.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers No. 1 (2026)

  • Writer: Marguerite Bennett
  • Artist: Andrew Griffith
  • Colors: Joshua Jensen

Marguerite Bennett didn’t waste any time getting into things. There was a quick explanation of what everyone has been doing, we learned who the villain is (Rita Rabiosa) and what she can do, and we saw that the team (and their Zords) are rusty. On top of that, while Jason, Trini, Zack, and Kimberly answered Billy’s call for help, it looks like Tommy declined. I can’t wait to find out if he did and why and what he’s been up to.

Wade Wilson: Deadpool No. 5

  • Writer: Benjamin Percy
  • Artist: Geoff Shaw
  • Colors: Alex Sinclair

I knew that Benjamin Percy was going to rock as a Deadpool writer, but I didn’t think that he’d have me almost in tears so quickly because I missed Wade and Blind Al’s relationship. She understands Deadpool in ways that no one else does. Sometimes it’s motherly, but Benjamin Percy makes it clear that Wade is her best friend and that she cares for him deeply.

This was a perfect representation of the Merc with a Mouth. Readers see his joking side, creativity with violence, and, most importantly, his emotional depth. The best part is that this series is only beginning and will only get better.

The Exorcism at Buckingham Palace No. 3

  • Writer: Hannah Rose May
  • Artist: Kelsey Ramsay
  • Colors: Heather Breckel

Hannah Rose May has been brilliant in this series of Exorcism stories with the creative ways we’ve seen the demons possess people. What’s really impressive is how she’s written their defeats.

It can’t be easy to write about how an evil being is defeated when it’s normally an exorcism. It almost always involves a prayer, but there has to be more to it. In this case, the love of the family was used to take down the demon. However, while the enemy was defeated, it looks like this isn't the end of the Exorcism storyline.

One of my favorite parts of this series has been the art of Kelsey Ramsay. It’s easier to show scary images in movies and TV shows because they have the advantage of moving objects. Nevertheless, Kelsey Ramsay makes the demon, Thalra'dun (or the Darkened Tide), terrifying with creative, dark images.

Absolute Green Lantern No. 15

  • Writer: Al Ewing
  • Artist: Sid Kotian
  • Colors: Prasad Rao

The evolution of Green Lantern Sojourner “Jo” Mullein has been a joy to see. She’s been forced to learn how to use her powers on the fly and continues to improve. But nothing she’s done has been as amazing as this issue.

Jo defeated a much more experienced Red Lantern (Tomar-Re) with the same experience he bragged about. Because, while he says he’s learned everything, Jo says that she doesn’t have limits. It was a perfectly executed plan by a brilliant creative team.

She-Spawn No. 2

  • Writer: Gail Simone
  • Artist: Ig Guara
  • Colors: Robert Nugent

Jessica (She-Spawn) has no idea why she was chosen to protect Al Simmons when she was the one who killed him to begin with. Also, why is Al eight years old? The latter is answered, but the former wasn’t. If I had to guess, it’s because future him remembers that Jessica's the one who saved him in the past. If that’s the case, it must have been difficult to save the person who killed you in the future.

Gail Simone mixes the tragedy of knowing that a kid was tortured with some humorous moments from Jessica. Thankfully, it isn’t done in a wacky way. It stays true to Jessica, who is dealing with PTSD herself on top of feeling like a worthless parent. Brilliantly done.

Lucky Devils No. 8

  • Writer: Charles Soule
  • Artist: Ryan Browne
  • Colors: Ryan Browne and Kevin Knipstein

Collar’s been working to change things in Hell, and it’s finally happening. But he isn’t doing it on his own. He has an army of devils with him, and they’re ready to show their humans that the true path to happiness (and the destruction of Hell) is by being good.

While Collar and Cam are working on changing Hell, Starr gets an offer from the President of the United States to be part of his cabinet. That means her and Rake's reach will extend to everyone in America. Unfortunately for Rake, Starr is starting to question her devil.

The build-up to this, the pentultimate issue of Lucky Devils, has been worth the wait. The next issue will certainly be a banger.

Justice League: Dream Girls – A DC Pride Event

  • Writers: Nicole Maines and Jadzia Axelrod
  • Artists: J. Bone, Ted Brandt, Ro Stein, and Nicola Scott
  • Colors: Annette Kwok, Marissa Louise, and Dearbhla Kelly

This is going to be one of the best mini-series of the year, and it couldn’t have happened to better characters. Readers will see Dreamer and Galaxy getting the attention they deserve in an adventure that has them traveling the dreamscape. The best part is that this is a weekly series, so you won’t have to wait month to month for it to be released.

Thanks for reading. Stay tuned to Bam Smack Pow and their social media sites, Bluesky, Instagram, and Twitter for more comic book, TV, and movie news, opinions, and rumors as they come out.
