Of the streaming services, Disney+ isn’t always quick to hand out early renewals to shows, which is perhaps why it’s so exciting to see the service handing out a surprise early renewal to a hit series that is shaping up to be one of the platform’s greatest success stories.
In a surprise move, Disney has announced the renewal of Percy Jackson and the Olympians for a third season! That’s right, Percy Jackson and the Olympians will be coming back for a third season with Disney+ betting big on the breakout series with an early renewal ahead of its second season.
“From the moment Percy Jackson and the Olympians debuted, it was clear this series had struck a chord with fans of all ages,” said Ayo Davis, president, Disney Branded Television, in a statement announcing the renewal. “With season two set to premiere this December, we’re thrilled to announce that Percy’s journey will continue with a third season. Huge thanks to our incredible cast and creative team, our partners at 20th Television, and our visionary and talented producers who continue to bring Rick Riordan’s world to life with such depth and imagination.”
Following a breakout debut season that ranked as one of the most-watched streaming series following its debut in December 2023, becoming an instant hit and earned praise among fans for remaining true to the source material to give fans of Rick Riordan’s hit book series an accurate adaption that captures the magic of the books.
The third season will follow the events of the third book in the series, The Titan’s Curse, keeping with the tradition of each season adapting one of the books in the franchise.
“We’re so grateful to be continuing the story of Percy Jackson on Disney+. This third season will be new territory for the screen, bringing fan favorites like the Hunters of Artemis and Nico di Angelo to life for the first time,” teased Rick Riordan. “It’s a huge sign of commitment from Disney, and speaks volumes about the enthusiasm with which the fandom has embraced the TV show. Thank you, demigods worldwide!”
Season 2 is set to arrive sometime this December and the show’s main cast is expected back for season 3 including stars Walker Scobell, Leah Sava Jeffries, Aryan Simhadri, Charlie Bushnell, Dior Goodjohn, and Daniel Diemer.
What remains unclear is when exactly production on season 3 might begin, but it’s likely that the early renewal will see production kicking off sometime this year. Riordan recently confirmed a writers room had been opened to begin work on scripts for the third season which means it’s possible filming could begin as early as summer or fall.
Regardless of when production begins on the new season, it's exciting to see Disney continuing to bet big on the show and to know that another season of Percy Jackson will be coming after season 2! The early renewal also should help Disney prevent a long break between seasons and possibly open the door for season 3 to arrive sometime in late 2026.
