Doctor Doom’s biggest win ever comes at a cost he’s not willing to pay

Doctor Doom defeated the Avengers, Fantastic Four, and the X-Men, but the cost came at a price he didn't want to pay.

One World Under Doom delivered on the promise of Victor Von Doom being recognized as the phenomenal character fans say he is. It isn’t just taking over the world (which is impressive in itself). He continuously outsmarted and defeated his enemies (the heroes and villains of Marvel Comics). At one point, readers learn he used time travel in one of the most creative ways ever (2025's Fantastic Four No. 3). Considering how often it’s used in comics, that says a lot.

Despite his recent accomplishments, he outdid himself in One World Under Doom No. 8. Doom takes away the powers of mutants using the same chaos magic Scarlet Witch used in House of M. That’s a feat anyone would be proud of. However, the crescendo came next.

Doom uses a spell that destroys his armor and turns it into magical shards to attack everyone coming after him. It leaves even the most powerful people like Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers) and Beta Ray Bill near death. Unfortunately, that spell came with a cost.

At the beginning of this issue, Valeria tried to talk her Uncle Victor into stopping his attacks. She reminded him that this started as a chance for glory. Now that he has it, she asks where it ends. Doom says humanity's reaction to his transition of power is normal. People will eventually get used to his rule and understand it's necessary. He then expels her from the Astral Plane and blocks off her access to him.

Later, as Victor stands victorious and gloats to the world. Doom says that his enemies lie dead, but alive, and their defeat will be a reminder of his power and his mercy. Sadly, as he pontificates, Doom hears a dying voice say “unc…” He looks over and realizes that Valeria, the one person he never wanted to hurt, was a victim of his attack. The last panel shows her head falling off her shoulders.

I was curious to see how Doom’s reign would end. Valeria's death being the cause of his defeat makes sense. Ryan North built Doctor Doom up to be all-powerful, so defeating him with punches and optic blasts wouldn't work. Instead, his end comes from the one thing people forget about Victor: He cares. And accidentally killing the person he cares about more than even himself is the one thing he won't get over. Stay tuned to Bam Smack Pow to see where things go from here.
