When it comes to the most popular characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, you will absolutely find Wanda Maximoff on that list. Originally introduced in 2015's Avengers: Age of Ultron, Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch became an instant fan-favorite, with audiences championing more screen-time and development for the character. When Disney Plus series WandaVision came out in 2021, they finally got their wish.
With Wanda officially becoming the Scarlet Witch, she went on to play one of the most pivotal roles in the franchise's Multiverse Saga. However, it's been some time since Elizabeth Olsen has featured in an MCU project and, with the primary version of Wanda seemingly being dead in the Sacred Timeline, fans have truly wondered if the MCU star is officially done with the franchise.
The answer is no, as her next project is on the horizon and Marvel has confirmed that she'll be playing a pretty big role in it.
Elizabeth Olsen's Marvel return as the Scarlet Witch highlighted in new Marvel Zombies poster
We are just days away from Elizabeth Olsen's next Marvel project. The beloved MCU star is set to reprise her role as the Scarlet Witch in upcoming animated series Marvel Zombies, which will feature a variant of Wanda Maximoff that succumbs to the zombie virus that ravages the population. But "succumbs" is probably the wrong word to use here, as the undead creatures are very much living nightmares - especially Wanda, who commands the whole zombie population as their own leader.
To give us all a glimpse of just how deadly the creature is, Marvel has unveiled a brand new poster for Marvel Zombies in which the Scarlet Witch takes center stage. Check out the horrifying Marvel poster below:
There’s no escaping her hunger.

Behold Scarlet Witch: the Queen of the Dead in #MarvelZombies, a Marvel Animation four-part event coming September 24, only on @DisneyPlus. pic.twitter.com/4S9QFuyVJ3
The caption on the official Marvel Studios tweet unveiling the poster refers to the character as the Scarlet Witch: Queen of the Dead, alluding the rumors that she will be the one controlling the majority of the zombies. Okoye also has a prominent role in the poster, further supporting the long-standing rumors that she will be Wanda's second-in-command. And Captain America also appears in the artwork as the image of the zombified Cap has become a symbol of horror that really highlights how dark the world of the Marvel Zombies will go.
But above them all (including the central zombie with half a missing face), the Scarlet Witch hovers against the red moonlight. As her name suggests, red is Wanda's color and something tells us that the world will be under a red light for a large portion of the upcoming series.
Marvel Zombies takes place on a parallel earth within the MCU's Multiverse, showing us all what would happen if the Avengers were infected by a zombie virus from the Quantum Realm. This was also the plot of a season 1 episode of fellow Marvel Animation series What If...? but given the iconic source material that inspired that installment, there is so much more that can be done with the concept than one 30-minute episode of TV can showcase. That's where this spinoff comes in.

As for Elizabeth Olsen, this is the last Marvel Studios project that she's officially attached to (for now). The real version of Wanda Maximoff seemingly died in 2022's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness when she sacrificed herself to make amends for all of the evil things that she did while under the influence of the Darkhold, but there have been plenty of rumors in the years since suggesting that the character will return at some point in the near-future - particularly Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars.
Since then, Olsen has reprised her role to voice Wanda in the second season of What If...? and now she does so again in Marvel Zombies. Here's hoping that these alternate versions of the characters aren't the final time she plays the role. After all, the world loves Wanda Maximoff and the MCU's Multiverse Saga could really use the help of the Scarlet Witch as it prepares for the arrival of Doctor Doom.
Marvel Zombies arrives on Disney Plus on September 24.
