Fans of the Marvel universe and a galaxy far, far away rejoice! The crossover of our dreams is coming to comics in January 2027. At New York Comic Con, it was announced that characters from Star Wars and Marvel will meet in the new Star Wars/Marvel: Hope Assembles series.

Star Wars comics have been a popular way to expand and continue the franchise. But while Marvel comics have had other notable film and television crossovers in the past—such as with DC Comics, Capcom, and Godzilla—this is the first time that Marvel and Star Wars will officially cross over.

Considering Disney bought up both properties nearly two decades ago (2009 and 2012, respectively), it’s a surprise the two franchises have taken this long to unite, though outgoing Marvel Comics editor-in-chief C.B. Cebulski was quoted saying this has been on the cards at Marvel ever since the two licenses were acquired by Disney.

What is Star Wars/Marvel: Hope Assembles about?

2027 is the 50th anniversary of Star Wars, and to celebrate the historic anniversary, Marvel Comics and Lucasfilm Publishing have developed the historic Star Wars/Marvel: Hope Assembles, a six-issue limited series that brings together heroes and villains from both franchises.

The series will follow a single story where characters in Marvel’s prime universe, Earth-616, witness the events of Star Wars: A New Hope following a “reality-shattering spell.” This means the Avengers, Spider-Man, the X-Men, the Guardians of the Galaxy and possibly more will team up with Rebel heroes like Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo, and Chewbacca, to name a few.

Doctor Doom, Thanos, and Ultron are some of the Marvel villains featured on the covers. Per Marvel.com, Doom will be aligning himself with Darth Vader and the Galactic Empire. The heroes are really up against it!

Who's behind Star Wars/Marvel: Hope Assembles?

Star Wars/Marvel: Hope Assembles is written by veteran filmmaker and comics writer Kevin Smith, a longtime fan of both franchises. The series is drawn by Eisner-nominated comic artist David Marquez. Cover artists announced so far are Alex Ross, Kaare Andrews, and Dan Jurgens. It’s disappointing that there don’t seem to be any women on the creative team, though.

Like most comic series these days, there will be a host of variant covers to collect. There are 7-8 different cover variants. The David Marquez covers are the main ones and will form a connected image; there are the Alliance covers, which will feature pairs/groups of heroes and villains, including a cover by iconic artist Alex Ross. There’ll also be ‘Battle’ variants of the characters in action; the ‘Retro’ variants featuring old Star Wars comic art, as well as the Marvel Homage variants featuring characters from both universes.

Continuing the crossover vein, A New Hope variants will feature Marvel characters in the film’s scenes, while another set of variants will see characters swapping their weapons for those from the other franchise.

Fans can get ready to assemble the Force with the first issue dropping in January 2027, followed by monthly drops for the rest of the series.
