Everything revealed about Marvel's Wolverine at San Diego Comic-Con

It's nearly time to step into the shoes of Marvel's most iconic antihero in Marvel's Wolverine. But first, let's go over all the game's announcements at SDCC.

Developer Insomniac Games is no stranger to telling engaging stories starring Marvel characters. They first ventured into this larger-than-life superhero world with the release of Marvel's Spider-Man for PS4. Since then, the studio has released a Miles Morales spinoff, a remaster of the original adventure, and its most ambitious title to date, Marvel's Spider-Man 2. The crew at Insomniac is the best at what they do, but what they are about to do isn't very nice.

Marvel's Wolverine is just around the corner. Scheduled to be released on Sep. 15, 2026, the upcoming PlayStation 5 video game will let players take control of Logan as he attempts to find out more about his past while also rescuing mutants captured by order of Bolivar Trask.

James Howlett is bound to cross paths with iconic Marvel characters such as Jean Grey, Mystique, and Sabretooth. Furthermore, it has been confirmed that he will battle the Reavers, Sentinels, and plenty of other relentless villains. However, there were many details we didn't know about this anticipated title, and Marvel has finally decided to shed some light on some of them.

Everything revealed about Marvel's Wolverine at SDCC 2026

Leave it to Marvel to host an iconic Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con. Marvel's Wolverine Creative Director Marcus Smith, Game Director Mike Daly, Narrative Director Walt Williams, and Sr. Project Director Jess Reiner-Reed took the stage to reveal what to expect from their upcoming superhero video game. They were also joined by the actors behind Wolverine and Jean Grey, Liam McIntyre and Krizia Bajos, as well as Marvel Games Executive Producer Eric Monacelli.

Things kicked off with the release of a song titled "Logan"—created by composer David Fleming—which you can hear right here. Additionally, Fleming also shared insights on the process of creating the score for one of the most popular heroes ever:

"It only seemed right that I would start creating the music for Marvel’s Wolverine in the wilderness, or the closest thing I could find - a barn in the California desert packed with instruments more typical of a western than of a superhero story. Wolverine is, of course, a superhero—one of the most beloved—but it's what makes him unique within that pantheon that resonates with me and so many. He feels like a man out of time - his archetype more in step with gunslingers of the western frontier or the wandering ronin of feudal Japan. Most crucially, there is a conflict at his core. Logan is at once a feral, animalistic loner while also a man of deep emotion, with a sense of honor as unbending as his metallic skeleton. His reclusive nature belies a heart in search of belonging, and of its own purpose. I was thrilled to get the chance to explore Logan's complexity through music, and to help shape this character I've loved since reading X-Men & Wolverine comics as a kid."

Fleming also discussed the complexities of composing scores for the wide range of X-Men characters set to appear in Marvel's Wolverine:

"Of course, the Marvel universe is full of colorful characters, and it was an insane and exciting challenge to color the score in a similar way - brutally distorted visceral-rock for Sabretooth, undulating harp arpeggios and guitars for Jean Grey. In truth, I much prefer talking about the characters than the sound of the music itself."

To ramp things up, a new story trailer for Marvel's Wolverine was showcased, which you can watch right here:

Perhaps some of the trailer's biggest reveals come in the form of our first look at Bolivar Trask and Lady Deathstrike, while The Hand has been officially confirmed to be an antagonistic force in the game. Furthermore, Jean Grey has a major presence in the trailer, and Krizia Bajos gave us a tease of what to expect from this iteration of the iconic mutant:

"This is a Jean Grey that we've never seen before. There is nowhere safe for mutants in this timeline. She crosses paths with Logan, and she can’t believe he wants to do so much to protect people on her side (...) It's incredibly nuanced. She has the burden of caring a great deal. She feels responsible for this newfound family. When she meets Logan, she locks eyes and feels a cosmic connection."

Marvel's Wolverine takes place in a world where mutants are constantly on the run from dangerous groups like the Reavers, while the rest of the world remains oblivious to their existence. As a result, a group of rebel mutants assembles to create a task force called Team X, which seeks to liberate as many of their kind as possible. While there was speculation on who would be part of this team, we finally have an answer thanks to SDCC:

With such a group of iconic heroes, a strong lineup of villains will be needed to challenge them. Bolivar Trask will be the main antagonist of Marvel's Wolverine, as he is responsible for hiring the Reavers to hunt every mutant he can for purposes yet unknown. Additionally, Lady Deathstrike will act as the leader of The Hand—a criminal organization that is somehow connected to Logan's past, although no more details about their relationship were unveiled.

Speaking of Logan himself, Mike Daly revealed the key considerations that went into bringing such an iconic character to life in the video game world:

"We prioritized claw combat. That was an essential part of the character. Leveraging his mutant healing factor, deep rage, enhanced senses to track and scout enemies, to sense incoming danger, and feel his heavy skeleton as you push forward. We wanted to make sure his personality came through in each action. His lost memories—you will be peeling back layers of his past. [It is] not an origin story (...) When we bring all those things together, it's all directed toward delivering a singular feeling to the player: 'I feel like Wolverine!'"

Marvel fans are no strangers to iconic crossovers, which is why Marvel's Wolverine will feature a collaboration with MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls. Players will be able to equip Logan with a Marvel Tōkon suit at launch.

The collaboration won't stop there, however, as a Marvel's Wolverine suit is coming to MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls on September 1.

In anticipation of the release of Marvel's Wolverine, superhero fans will be able to read an official prequel comic that explains why Logan left Team X but eventually decided to come back into the mix just in time for the events of the game.

Wolverine will finally be the star of his own video game since the release of X-Men Origins: Wolverine back in 2009. Needless to say, it's been a while since Logan had the chance to shine in this form of media, and we can't wait to see how it all pans out.

Marvel's Wolverine will be released on Sep. 15, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro.
