Marvel's Wolverine was first announced at PlayStation's Showcase presentation all the way back in 2021, and fans have lived through a rollercoaster of a journey ever since. Over the last five years, developer Insomniac Games was unfortunately hacked, cancellation rumors started swirling around, PlayStation refrained from revealing more about Logan's upcoming video game, and no one was quite sure when they would get to play it for themselves. Fortunately, the days of uncertainty are finally behind us, and it's all smooth sailing from here.
Marvel's Wolverine will be the first video game starring James Howlett released in over a decade since X-Men Origins: Wolverine hit shelves back in 2009. Needless to say, excitement levels are at an all-time high, and the best part is that the wait is almost over. But before we get to play Insomniac Games' highly anticipated title, it's time to learn more about what to expect from it.
PlayStation announced a new edition of State of Play set to take place on June 2, featuring "more than 60 minutes of updates, announcements, and gameplay reveals from top studios around the world." Better yet, the presentation gave us a deep dive into Marvel's Wolverine, and here's everything you need to know:
Insomniac reveals new Marvel's Wolverine gameplay footage and Jean Grey's role
Insomniac showcased new gameplay footage of Marvel's Wolverine. In it, Logan is in a race against time to rescue mutants trapped by the Reavers. However, he isn't the only one looking to save the day, as Jean Grey also joins the action. In the video, we see Logan and Jean team up to defeat a group of Trask mercenaries trafficking the trapped Mutants.
The combat is as violent as fans would expect, with bullets and attacks completely destroying Wolverine's suit (and removing pieces of his skin, too). As was to be expected, the regenerative powers of the iconic antihero are on display as well, as you can visibly see how Logan regrows his muscles. Players will be able to use the environment to defeat enemies, and Jean will be able to assist them in combat, similar to how Miles Morales and Peter Parker teamed up to defeat a group of henchmen in Marvel's Spider-Man 2.
The environments are highly destructible and react to the player's every action. You can even see how the blood of your enemies dissipates in puddles of water. Furthermore, sparks will be generated whenever Logan's claws come in contact with any metallic surface.
Logan will be able to ride his bike in specific missions. In this case, he was chasing the mutants being transported along a highway. The level plays like an Uncharted sequence, as Logan will be able to jump between cars, fight enemies while on top of a moving vehicle, and get shot multiple times.
At the beginning of the mission, we also get a glimpse of Logan's traversal abilities. For starters, it seems there won't be any fall damage, as James jumped from very high buildings without receiving any damage. Furthermore, players will be able to climb the sides of buildings and jump lengthy distances.
Marvel not only revealed new gameplay for Marvel's Wolverine, but also teased its story in a new entry on the PlayStation Blog:
"Logan is tailing a group of mutants that have been hunted and captured by the Reavers, a guns-for-hire cybernetic militia. The Reavers have plans to deliver the mutants to their client, Bolivar Trask – a billionaire industrialist driven by a fanatical belief in human superiority. We also introduce another major player in Logan’s journey: Jean Grey, a powerful telekinetic and emergent leader of the captured mutants."
Other iconic Marvel characters such as Mystique and Sabretooth appear in a quick montage at the end of the gameplay breakdown. Furthermore, Insomniac Games revealed that players are able to pre-order Marvel's Wolverine now, ahead of its release date.
Marvel's Wolverine will arrive on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro on Sep. 15, 2026.
