Fallout is a massive and beloved franchise comprising four mainline video game titles (with a fifth one confirmed), no shortage of spin-off titles such as New Vegas or Fallout 76, a free-to-play mobile game, countless merchandise items, and one incredible TV adaptation that has reignited interest in the post-apocalyptic world filled with ghouls, giant irradiated hermit crabs, and—everyone's favorite—deathclaws.

Despite taking place in a reality where nuclear wars decimated nearly everything on their path, the world of Fallout is more alive than ever. There's potential for the franchise to expand and grow over the following years, and fortunately, it seems that will be the case. In the TV realm, Fallout Season 3 is expected to begin filming this spring. However, the video game world is bound to get new projects as well, and one of them is certain to make long-time fans happy.

Fallout: New Vegas remaster reportedly in the works

If you were to ask Fallout fans what their favorite video game in the franchise is, chances are you'd hear a lot of "New Vegas". Developed by Obsidian Entertainment and released in 2010, the iconic title is considered by many to be the pinnacle of the franchise as a whole, thanks to its deep role-playing mechanics and outstanding writing. There's only one problem: the game tends to run poorly on current PCs due to its age, especially if you try to install any mods. Not everything is bad, however, as the game may finally be adapted for the modern era.

Windows Central reported that a remaster or remake of Fallout: New Vegas is in the works, along with one for Fallout 3. They are planned to be similar in scope to The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered, which has reportedly "exceeded Microsoft's expectations". Many fans theorized that the mysterious countdown on the Fallout series' official website would lead to the reveal of a New Vegas remaster. However, it has been reported that the countdown is for something else entirely.

Since the release of Fallout Season 2, the player count for games like Fallout 4, Fallout: New Vegas, and Fallout 3 has doubled, signaling an increasing interest in the franchise. It wouldn't be a surprise if Xbox and Bethesda used this opportunity to pull the curtain back earlier than expected on upcoming projects, or even shadow drop them altogether.

A big question is who will be behind the remasters/remakes. Obsidian Entertainment, the masterminds behind the original adventure, just shipped two big games in 2025 in the form of The Outer Worlds 2 and Avowed. Now that their calendar isn't as busy, perhaps they could be the ones to bring the world of New Vegas to modern consoles and PCs. However, it's important to remember that Obsidian is a different studio from Bethesda, the true owners of the Fallout franchise. As such, it wouldn't be too far-fetched to assume another studio could be tasked with bringing the remaster to life.

Bethesda Game Studios executive producer and director Todd Howard confirmed that Fallout 5 will arrive only after the release of The Elder Scrolls 6, a game for which the release date still remains a mystery and which no one expects to see for the next few years. With such a large gap in between releases, a couple of remasters/remakes wouldn't hurt in the slightest. Hopefully, it won't be long before we finally have some concrete answers and Xbox announces what's next in their video game lineup. In the meantime, we still have four more episodes of Fallout Season 2 to go, and with a bit of luck, we'll get to see more of the deathclaw in action.
