Fans of the source material of Amazon Prime Video's The Boys have questioned the show's planned changing to the story's ending. In Garth Ennis’ comic book, it’s revealed that Homelander isn’t the cause of Billy Butcher’s problems. It was actually Black Noir, who was a clone of Homelander created to take him out if things went sideways. Sadly, Black Noir goes crazy because he’s next to the person he was created to kill, but wasn’t allowed to do it. Showrunner Eric Kripke says this ending won’t happen in the show. As a fan of The Boys comic book, this is a good thing.
A different ending will leave people who know the comic book on the edge of their seats. Plus, since the show has already changed most of the original storyline, it only makes sense that the finale would differ, too. And, if we’re being honest, most of Homelander’s final moments in the comic are extremely violent and may not have been suitable for the program. Considering everything we’ve already seen, that says a lot.
Another reason the Black Noir clone thing wouldn’t have worked is due to the involvement of characters from Gen V. They’ve played a pivotal role in season 4. And, according to a report from Entertainment Weekly, Marie Moreau (played by Jaz Sinclair) will play a pivotal role in the series finale.
For those of you who don’t know, or forgot, during the season 1 finale of Gen V, Marie took one of Homelander’s eye beams and survived. We don’t know how, but Erik Kripke says it has to do with her powers. "If she can control everybody's blood, then what can't she do? How is she not the most powerful superhero on the planet?" However, he went on to say that there are complications to that, saying, "Just because she has the potential to be, doesn't mean that she is.”
That doesn’t leave much to go on. Actually, that makes it seem like Marie doesn’t have much to do with defeating Homelander. It only talks about what she has the potential to do. Thankfully, Kripke did mention something that leaves clues to Marie’s involvement: “There's a lot in Gen V that really helps set up the climax of this final confrontation in The Boys.”
Combine that with the comments about her possibly being one of the most powerful people on the planet, and you can speculate that she’ll have a hand in defeating Homelander. Nevertheless, we’ll have to see the upcoming fifth and final season of The Boys to know for sure.
