Get pumped! Superman gets a new comic ahead of the summer movie

A legendary comic book character like Superman deserves a legendary writer like Dan Slott. That's why DC Comics put them together in the upcoming comic book, Superman Unlimited.

Iconic comic book writer Dan Slott has written titles for some of the most recognizable characters. Among them are She-Hulk (no one's written more comics about her than Slott), the Fantastic Four, and Spider-Man. The latter could be his most controversial. While this writer enjoyed everything from Amazing Spider-Man to everything he did with Otto Octavius in Superior Spider-Man, it was certainly divisive for others. Regardless of how you feel about that one, the series moved a lot of units whenever they were published.

Slott's next venture involves the most important comic book character of all time. He’s writing the Man of Steel in DC Comics' Superman Unlimited with artist Rafael Albuquerque. The esteemed writer said:

“He’s the first and the greatest superhero of all-time, and I’ve been waiting my whole life to tell stories about him. Not just because of all the amazing powers he has, but because of who he is inside. Rafael Albuquerque and I are going to take him—and you—to places you’ll want to escape to every month.”

Slott also took to social media platform Bluesky to tease fans with what they can expect from the Man of Steel's upcoming stories:

"What we WON'T be doing: Super-verse. Superior Superman. And so on... If you've read it in my other books, it ain't getting repurposed here. Trust me. I'll find NEW ways to make Superman's life... interesting. Mwahaha!

Sidenote:
Someone from Gorilla City will be working at the Daily Planet's IT."

Dan Slott’s writing is one of the best because he understands the characters involved. He uses that knowledge to change certain things to make his stories unique while maintaining what made them great. For example, Jennifer Walters wasn’t always a lawyer during his She-Hulk run. She spent a good amount of time being a bounty hunter. This led to a lot of entertaining content. She-Hulk was still smart, snarky, and strong; the only change was her profession. However, she still used her lawyer brain to keep herself safe and out of trouble.

In a press release, DC Comics group editor Paul Kaminski says that Slott’s creative mind will bring something new to the lives of Clark Kent, Lois Lane, and Metropolis, including giving villains worldwide an advantage when they fight The Man of Steel.

"We just launched Justice League Unlimited in the fall, and Mark Waid and Dan Mora are telling a tale of unlimited Super Heroes in that ongoing series. In contrast, Slott and Albuquerque’s Superman Unlimited is a tale of unlimited Super-Villains that are super-charged by Kryptonite. Green K is everywhere. Superman is going to need to get to work and adapt to survive."

A “massive extinction-level Kryptonite asteroid” comes to Earth leaving shards available to the wrong people. With that much Green K floating around, criminals will have more confidence when Superman shows up because they'll have something that can weaken him. While that’s bad for Supes, it’s great for readers. Especially the ones who think he’s too overpowered. Now they'll see the truth about Kal-El. He's more than his superpowers. He’s an incredible thinker and planner.

Clark Kent’s life is changing as well. The Daily Planet is going global and getting offices in places like Coast City and Gotham City. While Lois Lane is still Editor-in-Chief of the Daily Planet, it’s reported that “Behind it all is the tech-savvy of a new IT specialist from Gorilla City, King Solovar’s goddaughter, Tee-Nah.” There’s no way someone from Gorilla City could be shady right? And even if she is on the up-and-up, someone from Gorilla City may well try and make her so something she may not want to (most likely Grodd).

Having this series released just weeks after the Superman trailer (and some months before the movie itself is released) is brilliant. It should get people pumped forthe first movie in James Gunn's DC Universe and bring in new readers, too. This is incredible timing for DC on top of a fantastic creative team. This writer can’t wait to see what’s next for The Man of Steel.

Superman Unlimited is scheduled to be released on May 21, 2025. Stay tuned to Bam Smack Pow for more news as it develops.
